Thoughts About Having Cosmetic Surgery (Face Lift) at a Residency Program?
Thank you for the question. Plastic surgery residents are surgeons prior to residency (unlike so called "cosmetic surgeons" who do a weekend course to learn about procedures and never actually train). Just as in practice, there are talented residents and there are average residents. Since they are actually assisting an attending surgeon, just find out who that person is and you will be safe.
where the SMAS is elevated by plication (folding) rather than imbrication (trimming)? I the tissue fixed onto itself or into the bone? There seems to be a difference of opinion regarding technique ad longevity; and, this is very important to a patient! I know everyone's skin differs, but photos are not reliable since every doctor takes them at a different phase of recovery.
Thank you for the question. It is a very complicated one without consensus. If you get two plastic surgeons in a room and ask them that question you would get 10 opinions. Most important is that some form of SMAS manipulation is combined with limited skin excision. I perform all types of SMAS lift and base what kind on a multitude of factors including but not limited to skin elasticity and thickness, width of the face, and amount of surgery necessary to improve the neck. When patients ask me if I do a specific surgery, the answer is always "yes" since I do all surgery depending on what the patients needs. To get the best result, just make sure you go to a plastic surgeon that is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery since he will be trained in all procedures.
in my early 50s with drooping facial features. pray that someone tells me that a non surgery face lift is available -- alternative that doesnt require going through lots of recovering. May be I can get away with treating using filling wiht things like resatylne?
The answer is "yes...of course the non-surgical facelift is much better than a real facelift"...just kidding. There is no such thing as a non-surgical facelift. It was made up by non-surgeons who are incapable and not trained in surgery. I have had many patients come in saying, "Dr. Rosenpenis (fill in your doctors name) said I don't need a facelift and he can save me a great deal of money by just shooting in some fillers." Not only is it a lie but it doesn't work and is unethical. Anyone who claims otherwise is lying to you. I do more injectables then most dermatologists and therefore can undeniably state that fillers do not lift. In order to resuspend the tissues and realign the stretched ligaments as well as the underlying musculature, a facelift is the standard of care. You can see who has fallen for the hype when you look at all of those freaky looking ladies in Boca Raton whose cheeks look like shelves and are overinjected.
