For Just Fat Under the Chin - Lipo or Face Lift?

I have excess fat hanging beneath my chin and I want it removed. Is liposuction superior to a facelift for this purpose?

A: Liposuction or Facelift?

The answer depends on several factors including your age, skin tone, and presence/absence of changes to the platysma muscle.  Often, what is perceived by the patient as fat under the chin is a multifactorial problem that is more associated with the changes of aging than fat excess. Neck liposuction would be more typically performed on a 30 something year old patient and a Face/Neck-Lift would be more typical in an individual age 50 and up.

A: Double Chin Surgery

This is a very good question, because in SW Florida, many patients I see are enjoying their Golden Years.  Patients often ask me: "I'm over 70, should I even bother?"  My reply is simple: "You asked to see me, so there must have been enough motivation on your part to consider making a change".  The fact is that many patients, even in their late 70's lead active, healthy, and vibrant lives.

From an anatomic perspective, many patients in their late 70's have a  substantial amount of skin excess muscle (platysmal) laxity, and submental fat to create a moderate to severe amount of obliquity in the neck.  As I have stated in previous posts: the more substantial the aging changes are, the more involved the ensuing procedure must be to achieve a meaningful result.  Therefore, a Facelift procedure in a 78 year old is generally more challenging than the same procedure in a 58 year old, but still technically possible.  These statements are made with the assumption that the patient is healthy physically and emotionally.  Cost is relative to the area in which you live and the skill and expertise of the Surgeon you see.

Is Liposuction of the Chin Painful?

I'm a 31 year old woman and I've never had a surgical operation before. I don't think I handle pain particularly well but i'd really like to have the area under my chin reshaped.

A: Minimal pain with chin liposuction.

Liposuction of the chin can be performed under local anesthesia and patients afterwards complain of minimal to moderate discomfort that can be managed with Tylenol and pain meds.
