Will my Surgeon Be More Likely to Do a Better Job on my Rhinoplasty if I'm His First Surgery of the Day or the Last?

I know it seems like a silly question but its really not. Take for example my hair stylist. I've found she does a much better job if I'm her very first client of the day. Verses being the last when she;s worked all day and tired. I know a stylist goes through a lot more clients in a day then a surgeon, so their not comparable. But i'm still wondering if it makes a difference? I've researched my surgeon and am confident in him but i'm still looking for the best possible results, as is anyone!!

A: First or last - makes no difference

Actually, according to studies done in a variety of fields of surgery there was no difference in complications between the first and last case.  Now that doesn't mean you can't have a preference.  Personally, if I have a long and a short case, I would do the short case first, but every surgeon has their own preferences.  Discuss your concerns with your plastic surgeon.

How to Tell if my Nose is Broken?

I was in wrestling a few days ago, and I was slammed on my nose and now it is swollen and hard to breath out of. It's very sensitive, and whenever I move it, it makes a clicking noise. I'm just wondering if it is broken, and worth going to the doctor for.

A: It's probably broken

Altho you won't know unless you go to a doctor, it probably is broken.  Go to a Plastic Surgeon or Facial Plastic Surgeon.  The reason we want to see you early on is that if the nose and possibly septum are broken, they can be set in a relatively straight position and possibly avoid the need for future surgery.  A straight nose is easier to fix and a minor septal deviation easier than a major one.  In all liklihood the doctor will order an xray to confirm, but if the clinical exam is suspicious, you will probably need to have the fractures set.  The longer you wait the harder it is to do and after several weeks, you may have to wait several months for all the swelling to subside before fixing the deformity, also at a much greater cost.  Good Luck, Dr. Schuster from Boca Raton

I Am 9 Days Post Rhinoplasty and the Right Nostril is More Swollen Than the Left Side. Will It Go Down?

I had septo-rhinoplasty with an overprojecting asymmetrical tip. Because my tip was asymmetrical, a cartilage graft to the tip of the domes was used to get a more symmetrical look. The inside of my right nostril is more swollen than the left (I can see some white flesh/tissue- well, the surgeon said it is swelling. Due to this, from the outside the (more) swollen right nostril makes the nose/nostrils look(s) asymmetrical. Will this go down and become more symmetrical with time?

A: Nine days- You're far away from healed

As the other Dr. Schuster said, you are far too early to even tell.  There is still much swelling present.  Even if there is some asymmetry I certainly would not consider trying to fix this at nine days.  You can ask the surgeon, but if the nose looked symmetric to him at the time of surgery's completion, I am pretty sure it will look close to that in the end.  Be patient.  Dr. Schuster in Boca Raton
