What is a Typical Post-op Visit Schedule After Implant Reconstruction?

For tissue expander-to-implant reconstruction following bi-lateral nipple sparing mastectomy for breast cancer, what is a typical follow up schedule starting right after the surgery for exchange to final silicon implants? I understand that healing issues could change the timing and number of post-op visits, but barring serious problems, what is the ideal number and timing over the following weeks and months? Or even years? What might it be for later revision later surgery, if necessary?

A: I like to see patients the day after surgery

whenever possible then every 2-3 days until drains are out, then weekly depending upon chemo and radiation.  I wait at least 2-3 months after chemo before performing surgery.  Radiation can mean 6 month delays before revisional surgery.  I overexpand as much as possible prior to final implant and then plan on revisions at six months to one year after final expansion/chemo/radiation.

Behind the Muscle implants and Capsular Contracture?

Does Placement of a Breast Implant Behind the Muscle Decrease the Chances of a Capsular Contracture? Which method of breast reconstruction surgery is the least likely to result in capsular contracture?

A: Are implants under muscle better? The most common technique to place breast implants is either on top of the pectoralis muscle or under the muscle. Under the muscle placement has been shown on a number of medical studies to have a lower percentage of capsular contracture. Placing the implant on top of the muscle puts the implant in contact with breast tissue, increasing scar tissue around the implant. Placing the implant under the muscle also looks more natural, has less rippling and wrinkling and is easier to mammogram.

I Had Breast Implants 4 Weeks Ago and Today There Was a Small Amount of Blood and Bruising, Should i be Concerned?

A: Bleeding and bruising after breast implants It is normal to have some bleeding and bruising after breast augmentation. However, it is unusual 4 weeks after the procedure to have bleeding. I would make an appointment with your surgeon to be checked as soon as possible. Good luck!
