Otoplasty Scars... Can You Apply Makeup to the Scars?

How long after surgery must I wait?

A: Makeup on otoplasty incision

After an otoplasty, you should wait until the skin has healed somewhat before applying makeup. A good general rule of thumb is that once the sutures have been removed and all crusting has subsided, makeup is okay to use. This is usually around 3-4 weeks, but can vary. It is probably best to ask your surgeon.

Is It Possible To Fix An Overcorrected Otoplasty Surgery From 16 Years Ago?

When i was about 7 i did otoplasty on my ears so they did not stick out! The problem is that they are now completely into my head, very flat and a little deformed! There is no clearens from the "earbone" to the outer part! I can form my ear to be perfect with my hand! I was wondering if its possible to re operate so the ears are more bended more out and also so they are not so flat? Is it possible to do something with this? Im 23 years old now

A: Secondary Otoplasty

There are times where overcorrection occurs.   Depending on that particular patient and the amount of overcorrection, it is often possible to correct the overcorrection.   There are several ways to do this.  Which technique is used is dependent on what is found at the time of surgery.  Often releasing the sutures holding the cartilage together is enough.   Sometimes repositioning cartilage or even taking cartilage grafts can be used.

Is it OK for Non Absorbable Sutures to be Used on the Inside of Ear?

I will be doing an otoplasty surgery next month. I asked the doctor if I need to return back after 7 days to remove the sutures and he said no. He said, he'll be using non absorbable sutures on the inside and absorbable sutures on the outside, therefore I do not need to stitch off. However, I learnt that non absorbable sutures HAVE to be removed so it doesnt really make sense for him to use it on the inside right? I am really worried now and wonder if I should do this surgery with him.

A: Suturing for Otoplasty

To perform an otoplasty, one usually uses absorble as well as non-absorbable sutures.   I use non-absorbable sutures to secure the cartilage----I want lasting strength here.  I use abosrbable sutures on the deep skin closure. I expect that the healing skin will "dissolve" this suture within 8 weeks.  I use non-abosrbable sutures on the shallow skin because I take those out in 7-10 days.  Diffferent sutures are made of different materials.  Different sutures do different jobs.  Choosing the correct suture for the right job is important to getting a good result.
