Liposuction or Thigh Lift After Weight Loss?

I have gone from 22 stones to 14 stones over a course of 6 years. The skin on my inner thighs droops down. I was considering a thigh lift but after going for a consultation, the surgeon recommended a liposuction and said that with compression garments and massage, the skin should go back into place. I do have some stretch marks on my inner thighs so I am wandering, will my thighs look worse after liposuction? I am worried about having liposuction and then only discovering afterwards that I will still need to remove excess skin. What would you recommend I should do?

A: For the treatment of loose skin in the medial thighs following weight loss, skin

excision in the form of a thigh lift is usually necessary to achieve the desired result.  Typically, a good result from liposuction depends on the skin tightening up after the fat has been removed, much as the loose abdominal skin will tighten after pregnancy.  In the case of excess skin after weight loss, this elastic quality of the skin has already been compromised, and it is unrealistic to expect that you will get the necessary skin tightening from liposuction alone.  Removal of an ellipse of extra skin, tightening the distal thigh skin to the groin crease in multiple layers is the best way to achieve the smooth look you are looking for.  Although most patients are very satisfied with this approach, be aware of the scar in the groin crease, which is well hidden but not invisible.

Am I a Good Candidate For A Tummy Tuck or Liposuction? I've Never Been Pregnant, Lots Weight Recently.

Hi, I have lost 30 lbs recently, now I weight 107 lbs, and 5'1". I never been pregnant in my life, and since I was overweight for almost 20 years in my life, I still have some fat in my upper + lower abdominal areas, flanks, and upper back. Will liposuction help or tummy tuck help to scupture my body in this case?

A: Liposuction is an excellent technique for removing localized collections of excess body fat,

but a good result is dependent on the ability of the remaining skin to tighten after the fat has been removed.  If you already have loose skin from your weight loss, than realistically, removing additional fatty tissue without addressing the excess skin might actually make the situation worse.  In addition, liposuction will not address any stretch marks or scarring that are already present, whereas a tummy tuck can improve each of these situations.  Finally, if you have a rectus diastasis or loose abdominal musculature, liposuction will not help while a tummy tuck can allow the surgeon to repair and tighten the muscles.  You would need to have a consultation with an experienced surgeon to determine which approach would be best in your particular situation.

Liposuction Vs. Tummy Tuck - What's the Difference?

I've had 3 kids and definitely need some help in my stomach area, but I'm not sure if I would need liposuction, a tummy tuck, or both to get the pre-baby look I want.

A: Liposuction can't remove excess skin the way tummy tuck can.

For those patients who have abdominal contour issues with excess fat, especially is localized areas, liposuction can achieve great results. We prefer smart lipo to add a little skin tightening to the procedure, and it works very well. However, those people who have extra skin and loose muscles, from childbirth, for example, or who have lower abdominal scarring from prior surgeries, an abdominoplasty, or "tummy tuck" is the best operation.

Having a tummy tuck allows the surgeon to tighten the abdominal wall muscles, remove extra skin, and remove lower abdominal scarring, which liposcution cannot do. Consultation with an experienced cosmetic surgeon should help guide you as to which procedure is best in your particular situation. I would suggest seeing a surgeon who can offer either procedure, rather than someone who only performs one or the other.
