Hi, I received a mild salicylic acid peel 24 hours ago. I do not feel any tightness and my skin has not started to flake yet. When will it start to flake and for how long? Thank you!
Often times when I use mild salicylic on patients they will only flake, starting a couple of days post peel, and lasting only a couple of days. It depends on what I am trying to accomplish with the skin. If I am working with an acne patient then I want to see them more frequently and therefore will not apply a heavy dose of sal. If I am just trying to control oil or prevent breakouts I will do the same because a lot of my patients do not want any downtime. Your skin type will also play a factor in how a treatment is performed. The darker the skin the more careful you have to be with chemical peels so maybe your Dr wanted to do a more mild peel to begin with. I have great results with my mild treatments so don't be worried if you do not peel like a snake. If you wanted a stronger treatment then I would talk to your Dr and make certain your expectations are on par with his/hers.
I had my first 18% chemical peel done yesterday (22/07/11) for mild/mod acne (I have never had a chem peel prior). And today I am very red/ brown and patchy around my mouth and on the left side of my nose and under my eye. Is this normal? Or have I sustained a burn or hyper-pigmentation? I had it done in my derm's office; however, they are closed for the wknd and just wanted some advice.
Salicylic acid peels up to 30%, in general, are safely used in people of all skin pigmentation types. From what I can see in your pictures, you have a very normal amount of red/brown color that I would expect to see 24 hours after your peel. Any dark spots you had to begin with tend to get darker before they peel. Redness and darkening can last for 4-7 days while the peeling takes place. Areas around the mouth, eyes, and nose tend to peel first. I think you will be very pleased with your peel based on your skin's reaction so far, and I would be surprised if you developed any hyperpigmentation. However, it's very important that you keep they areas moist with a cream or ointment (e.g. CeraVe or Aquaphor), use a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil, avoid picking, avoid rigorous exercise while peeling, and use at least SPF 30 sunblock consistently.
I understand you had several peels and you know what it is like to receive one, but treating yourself is risky and can be dangerous. You are putting yourself at risk for burns, scarring, hyperpigmentation just to name a few. It's not worth the risk. I recommend you continue to see your skin-care specialist for the chemical peels who can then recommend products that you can use at home to maintain your results.
