Can I get a tummy tuck and still play competitive full-contact sports with no pain or fear of damage? (Never had children, this procedure is to remove loose skin from having been overweight for birth to age 18.) Some of the doctors I've met have describe suturing muscles to create internal corsets as part of the procedure where others have not mentioned so much of this. Would one of these options be better than the other in terms of playing sports? Thank you for your time and help.
Even with muscle repair, full contact sports can be resumed after a tummy tuck, but you must give adequate time for healing.
I advise my patients to allow 6 full weeks of limited activity, without stressing the repair after the procedure. Your body needs time to build strength in the repairs.
After this time, it is wise to begin gradualted strengthening exercises and increase in activities. Too much, too soon will result in complications, compromise results and prolong recovery.
Depending on your particular situation, expect 3-4 months, as a minimum before resuming full contact sports.
I had a TT 8 months ago. I now have dog ears on both sides. I talked with the plastic surgeon about them. I called to schedule an appt to have them removed. They are charging me to have them removed. Is that a standard practice? Anyone out there have this problem?
We make our best effort to avoid "dog ears" after a tummy tuck while limiting scar length, but as the tissues settle post-op, dog-ears may require removal. This is more likely in large tummy tucks and in people with poor skin elasticity.
As a minor touch-up procedure, we typically will remove the dog ears with local anesthetic. There is no significant recovery time.
Practices my differ on whether there is a charge for supplies (a "tray charge" for sutures and other disposables). Best to discuss with your surgeon.
Had my abdominoplasty in 2003. On and off, my belly button would ooze. Discharge/slight blood and bad smell. Surgeon did revision surgery a few years after, just said there was a LOT of hair in there, believed to be the cause (I am male, coarse tummy hair) problem still as bad as ever, now 8 years later. I want to have a second revision surgery to remove the belly button all together and just have them close it up like a normal scar. Have never had any problems at all with the abdominal scar!
I advise you see your surgeon.
The causes might include remaining ingrown hair, retained/infected suture, chronic sinus tract/cyst.
Your surgeon will want to explore the area carefully with adequate anesthesia for your comfort.
Even frustrated as you are, "removing the belly button completely" may not be necessary.
