I am considering removing two moles on my upper lip because they can be irritating when I shave. I have been told by a friend that shaving would be the best course of action because they are raised and excision could distort my lip. I wanted to know if shaving would be the best course of action and what are my options for removing the mole, but keeping the shape of my lip? I know their will be scaring and possible pigment left over, but are their any other concerns I should be aware of?
Both shave exision and elliptical excision are options. The pros and cons of each should be discussed with you. I dont believe exision will cause distortion of the lip. in my opinion both options are reasonable and if done properly will give a good aesthetic outcome. The disadvantage of shave excision is that the lesion can recur. If you have shave excision performed an elman surgitron device or Co2 laser is helpful to treat the base of the lesion and reduce the chance of recurrence.
I had a mole shave biopsied and the result stated severely abnormal - recommend removing slightly more. Dermatologist said I needed to set up a punch biopsy. I went in and had this done and I think he removed it with 3mm margins. Im extremely concerned because after researching I have learned that severely atypical moles should be treated like melanoma in situ and be excised with 5 mm margins. Im concerned that it was not an excision and just a punch biospy as well. Should I be worried?
Also, others were removed through a shave biopsy - two were moderately atypical and one was mildly atypical. The dermatologist said that no further treatment was needed on any of these unless the area repigments. Is it possible that a shave biopsy can give clear margins on moderate atypical moles?
The lesion needs to be excised such that there are microsopically clear margins. Punch biopsy or elliptical excision are both acceptable methods of excision as long as the margins are clear.
I had a punch biopsy done to remove a mole from my leg. The diagnosis was: "lentiginous junctional dysplastic nervus with moderate atypia, focally extending to the peripheral specimen margin". The doctor told me that the result is completely normal and that I don't need to have anything else done. Is is true that no other surgical excision is needed? Thank you very much.
While this is benign pathology there is a description of atypical cells. Rexcision to obtain clear margins would be recommended to be safe. Ongoing monitoring of moles is advised.
