Possible to Have a Breast Lift While Awake?

I have been considering a breast lift for some time now, but I am afraid of being put to sleep as I might not wake up. I was wondering if there was any way to have this type of surgery without having to go to sleep? Thank you.

A: Breast Lifting without general anesthesia possible, but not recommended

Yes, it is possible to undergo breast lifting without general anesthesia, but I would not recommend it.

Many of my colleagues inject tumescent fluid (very, very dilute "novocaine," similar to what is used for liposuction) into breasts for augmentations, reductions, and lifts. However, I have some concerns with this technique:

  • The surgery remains painful. It is very difficult to make the breast totally numb.
  • Tugging and pulling are a normal part of surgery. Will these sensations cause excessive anxiety?
  • Breast lifts can last 2-4 hours. Most patients can not lie flat and still for that length of time.
  • The fluid itself can distort the breast shape, and the lift may not be optimized.

The final decision is yours. And remember that general anesthesia is very, very safe in 2009. Statisically, the most dangerous part of your day of surgery will be driving to the surgery center, not the surgery or the anesthetic!

Is Breast Lift by Skin Excision Possible?

So I'm 19 years old with C-cup breasts. I lost some weight 1/2 years ago, obviously my breasts were a little bigger (still C cup though) but once I lost the weight, I noticed the skin is a bit stretched out.

I want my breasts to look fuller, perkier and be firmer. Is there a way to get a breast lift without reducing the cup size? I want to still be a c-cup, but I dont want to get implants. Is it possible to remove minimal skin, just enough to lift the breasts but not to reduce cup size?

A: Most Breast Lifts maintain current sizes

Yes, there are a variety of techniques for elevating the nipple-areolar complex without reducting the breast size significantly. I favor a "lollipop" incision, which sometimes requires a short horizontal extension (to create an up-side-down T).

Breast lifts usually do require the removal of some skin and a little fat. I doubt that these small amounts would radically change your breast size.

However, most breast lifts are most attractive with implants. Lifts really only lift the nipple and thin the breast mound. Most of the upper pole fullness (for attractive cleavage) is either God-given or prosthetic.

Small implants can return the volume lost by the removal of the skin and fat, as well as produce more cleavage.

Ultimately, it's your call, but it seems like I place a lot of implants 6 months after breast lifts.

Breast Lift Without Implants for GG Cup Breasts?

I wear a 34GG size bra and after having nursed 5 children, I'm in need of a Breast lift. Can it be done without Breast implants and will the lift leave my size the same or will it change? What is the down-time from this type of operation?

A: Breast Lifting versus Breast Reduction versus Breast Augmentation-Reduction

If you want the breasts higher, then you just need a lift. A lift may make your breasts cuter.

If you want the breasts smaller and higher, then you need a reduction (which normally incorporates a lift). Smaller breasts may relieve strain on your neck, upper back, and shoulders.

If you want the breasts to be about the same size, but lifted, and with more upper fullness, then you could opt for an augmentation-reduction. This is not a common operation. Breast tissue is removed, and the nipple is lifted upwards; additionally, implants are placed for more fullness in the upper poles. The net volume should not be changed, but the breast would be rounder and optimally rejuvenated.

Really, I can't tell you what you need. You should tell me what you want! Find a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with whom you feel comfortable, and then you and he/she can customize the procedure to fit your goals.
