I've had both upper and lower eye lid surgery, arm reduction and a tummy tuck. I am a smoker and am 51 years old. I've healed fine in all cases. Why can't I have a neck or facelift?
Nicotine is constrictor of blood vessels, decreasing blood flow to tissues that need to flow to heal after surgery. When plastic surgeons do operations that involve longer incisions and/or tissue flaps, the blood flow to these areas become critical. Without the blood flow ( or a decreased blood flow secondary to the effects of nicotine) healing can be compromised and/or tissue may not survive (tissue necrosis).
For this reason, most plastic surgeons will not operate on patients who smoke within a time period prior to surgery (for specific operations such as facelifting, breast lifting, tummy tuck surgery etc.).
I hope this helps.
I have read many questions and the doctors answers concerning the cost of a LifeStyle or QuickLift. So how much does the average board certified plastic surgeon charge for a facelift?
Thank you for your question. The pricing information varies depending on exactly what is performed, the surgeon's credentials and experience with the procedure, if the surgery is performed in an outpatient surgery center or in an office setting, who administers the anesthesia. Please be careful when choosing your surgeon because there is a difference in expertise, experience and credentialling. Facelifting surgery can range from $9000 and up depending on exactly what is performed. I hope this helps.
I am scheduled for a facelift in 2 weeks and i have some questions on getting prepared. Specifically my questions are: Low salt diet before and after, does it really help? What about foods rich in vitamin e since you are told to stop vit e supplements? What about vitamin e in face care products? Finally, must i stop restasis and antihistimine and decogestant eye drops and if so when? Thanks in advance - there are always great answers from the doctors on this site.
Thank you for the question.
Assuming you are currently following a good/healthy diet, I do not think you need to do anything special prior to surgery. Your plastic surgeon will “micromanage” your medications and management of any medical issues prior to surgery (usually during a "pre-operative” visit).
Equally important, the plastic surgeon will help prepare you for the aftercare required. Optimal results require well guided preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care.
Best wishes with your upcoming surgery.
