Could Facial Liposuction Help with my Cheeks?

I have overly thick pads of fat at the "front" of my cheeks; when I diet I lose from the "back", around my cheekbones, but never at the front. I hate the way they look, and also the way they feel; they seem to retain water at times, and then they feel "swollen", although their appearance doesn't change much. I'm well within my ideal weight range, and don't want to lose much more. Both my parents have heavy, jowly faces, so I'm pretty sure I know where this is going eventually. 28, female. Any suggestions?

A: Facial liposuction is to be avoided

Liposuction along neck and jawlines can be very satisfying in bringing about neck tightening and contouring. However, liposuction of cheeks or anywhere else on the face is not advisable for risk of nerve injury. In addition, the ideal complexion is one that has fuller volume along the upper 1/2 of the face which you currently have. You may have regret in a couple years if you have excess facial subcutaneous tissue removed, e.g. buccal fat pad removal, as hollow cheeks can be a sign of aging.

Which Type of Liposuction Leaves the Smallest Scar?

How big are typical liposuction scars? Are there any forms of liposuction that leve no scar at all? I am 6'4" and only slightly overweight. I am interested in getting liposuction around my stomach, buttocks, thighs and face...I was curious if its okay to get numerous body areas treated at one time and if there is a limit to how much fat they can remove in one treatment?

A: Liposuction scars depend on size of canula used

Micro canulas no more than few millimeters in diameter is typically used in a pure tumescent liposuction under mild sedation and typically leave minimal scar. Larger canulas are typically used in traditional liposuction done under general anesthesia so that the procedure can be completed quicker but can leave behind larger liposuction scar. For a fair skin person, the scar typically is not very noticeable a year after liposuction. On the other hand, ethnic skin may experience prolonged post-inflammatory pigmentation which can make the liposuction stand out for some time.

What's a Good Liposuction Alternative?

I am fearful of surgery and lipo. Is there a viable alternative to surgery, or is this the only way to get rid of tough to lose fat pockets?

A: Alternatives to Liposuction

If the goal is to rid of pot belly or love handles, there is so much one can do with diet and exercise. Tumescent liposuction allows for relatively quick gratification in minimizing fat deposits in the area treated. However, liposuction does not replace weight loss as most people will not notice significant weight reduction a month after liposuction. There may be procedures that can augment liposuction but not necessarily replace tumescent liposuction in the near future, e.g. Liposonix, Ultraphase.
