How is Mini Tummy Tuck Different from Full Tummy Tuck Regarding Anesthesia?

When are mini tummy tucks possible without the need of general anesthesia? http://www.pelosimedicalcenter.com/tummytuck_faq.htm

A: mini tuck vs full tummy tuck regarding anesthesia.

Thank you for your question. A full tummy tuck deals with your abdomen from the pubis region to the rib cage and involves significant movement of skin and tightening of the abdominal muscles.  This extensive surgery  requires ether general or spinal anesthesia.  A mini tummy tuck on the other hand is concerned with just the abdomen from the belly button down to the pubic region with minimal skin movement and muscle tightening.  As it is a  smaller operation it may be performed with local anesthesia with I.V. sedation. Of course, it could also be performed with general or spinal anesthesia.

Worried About Lumpy Tummy and Excess Skin After Tummy Tuck with Liposuction

I am having a mini tummy tuck with lower ab tightening and lipo of the rest of my abdomen, I am super worried I will end up lumpy of with loose skin above the belly button, I have had two previous pregnancy's and have to majority of loose skin bellow my belly button and a tiny, I mean tiny bit above? are my worries justified?

A: Mini Tummy Tuck and Liposuction

Dear Asley26FolsomCA,

A mini tummytuck is best suited for women with a small amount of loose belly skin and lower abdominal bulging. A mini tummytuck with be disappointing if you have any significant amount of loose skin and/or upper abdominal bulging.

From your photos, it appears that you *may* be a candidate for a mini tummytuck with liposuction. However, it is impossible to give you an evaluation without an in-person examination. I would discuss your specific concerns and goals with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon.

Warmest wishes,

A: Mini tummy tuck is often a disappointing procedure

Mini tummy tuck only addresses muscle looseness and excess skin below the belly button.  Less skin is removed through a shorter incision.  While it is common that a thin patient such as yourself may have much more fullness and loose skin in the lower belly, there usually is stretched out tissue above too.  This becomes way more obvious after the mini tummy tuck as the lower abdomen is tight and smooth and the upper is left loose.  Liposuction of the upper abdomen will often make this excess skin even looser and so does not help the situation.  The best way to know is with an in person examination.  Please make sure your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and he or she should be able to address your questions and concerns.
