How to Fix Bad Collagen Injections Under the Eyes?

I had a collagen injection on my eye bags sometime in 1996. Lately, I see some ugly lines and ugly formations on my face. My eyebags became worse now. I'm 50 yeas old but I look more than my age because of these ugly formations down my eyes. How much could it cost for a repair? Thank you.

A: Collagen injections and eyelid wrinkles

I don't believe the collagen injections you had 15 years ago has contributed to the eyelid wrinkles and eyebags you are now experiencing.  This is part of the normal aging process.  At this stage you would probably benefit from blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) to remove the exceess fat and skin that is cauing the wrinkles and bags.  This surgery takes approximately 1 to 2 hour to perform and  could be done under local anesthsia with some light sedation.  Costs can vary but usually run in the rate of $4,000 to $7,000.

Collagen Injection Alternatives - What Works Best?

My Dermatologist friend said that collagen injected is passe. You can now get better aleternatives. What are these?  do you agree they are better then collagen?

A: Many Fillers Available

There are many options available for filling in wrinkles and smoothing out the skin of your face. Most non-surgical procedures use a dermal filler. There are numerous types of dermal fillers on the market such as Radiesse, Restylane, Captique, Juvederm, and Arte-fill.

The administration procedure is painless, involving a few injections with a very tiny needle. They plump up wrinkles, effectively eliminating them, as well as smoothing tiny lines and other signs of aging. It is best to have a consultation to hear about each filler, some last longer than others and the costs vary. We have an office in San Francisco and Marin.

A: Delayed bumps from collagen injection appearing years later may due to Granuloma Formation

Delayed granuloma formation has been reported for bovine collagen and bovine collagen based fillers. If this occurs, one should seek consultation from a board-certified dermatologist. On the other hand, none has been reported for Evolence which is a porcine collagen based filler that has been demonstrated to result in less swelling and bruising compared to hyaluronic acid filler such as Restylane or Juvederm. On the other hand, bumps can appear within couple days after Evolence injection by a less experienced physician injector if the plane of injection is too superficial, relatively thin skin area of location injected (e.g. eyelids), or inadequate post-injection massage. However these bumps are not granulomas and almost always resolve after a month or two.
