Breast implants are very popular in San Francisco, especially for women in their twenties or as part of the "mommy makeover," a set of procedures designed to restore the body to pre-baby condition.

San Francisco plastic surgeons typically offer both saline and silicone breast implants for women interested in increasing or balancing breast size. Some San Francisco surgeons prefer one type of implant over the other, so it's important to ask the right questions at consultation.

What kind of breast implants are available?

San Francisco surgeons may offer breast implants from either Mentor Corporation, whose breast implant products include MemoryGel in a variety of shapes, textures, and sizes, or Allergan, whose saline and silicone breast implants are marketed under the name Natrelle.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline implants consist of a silicone rubber shell that is either pre-filled or inflated to the desired size with sterile saline during surgery. Most implants have a valve that is sealable by the surgeon.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone implants have an outer shell, also made of silicone, that is filled with a fixed amount of silicone gel. Silicone implants vary in shell surface (smooth/textured), shape, profile, volume, shell thickness, and number of shell lumens. Most silicone gel-filled implants are not adjustable.

Are silicone implants better than saline implants?

Some surgeons are of the opinion that silicone implants have a more natural look and feel than saline implants because silicone gel has a texture that is similar to breast tissue. One advantage to saline is that rupture is very easy to detect.

Saline implants have some advantages over silicone implants. Silicone implant ruptures are harder to detect. When saline implants rupture, they deflate and the results are seen almost immediately.

When silicone implants rupture, the breast often looks and feels the same because the silicone gel may leak into surrounding areas of the breast without a visible difference. Replacing a ruptured silicone gel implant is more difficult than repairing a saline implant. Silicone implants also have a higher rate of capsular contracture and a higher deflation rate.

Are silicone breast implants safe?

The Institute of Medicine has concluded that there is "no definitive evidence linking breast implants to cancer, neurological diseases, neurological problems or other systemic diseases." In 2006, the FDA approved the use of silicone breast implants after the single largest patient study ever conducted, in cooperation with Mentor Corporation.

Tips for finding the right breast augmentation surgeon

  • Ask your San Francisco breast implants plastic surgeon, what is your board certification?
  • May I see before and after photos of other San Francisco patients who have already had breast implants?
  • May I speak to a current patient who has already had breast implants?

Do not commit to breast augmentation with a San Francisco doctor or plastic surgeon based solely upon advertising, special pricing, or the referral of another patient before fully researching the background of the surgeon.
