What is the Risk of Disease Transmission when Sharing a Syringe but Switching Needle?

I just recently had 1 syringe of juvederm ultra plus injected into my upper lip for fullness by an RN. Upon using the first syringe she said that I really needed another syringe worth to achieve the desired effect. My best friend came with me and she only used half of her syringe. The Lady who did the injections said I could use the remainder of her syringe but she would switch the needles. Is there a high risk of blood related transmitted diseases by doing this.? It was a very poor decision.

A: Lip Augmentation

Hello,

There is no “discount” worth risking transmission of disease.  To be honest, the primary concerns in reusing needles / syringes / anything that isn’t properly sterilized are Hepatitis C and HIV.  Neither of which have a cure.  Regardless of the risk of reusing someone else’s syringe, why take the chance?

Hope this helps.

I Got Juvaderm Under the Eye in Feb 11 I Have Two Dark Spots Under my Eyes, How Do I Remove Them?

Over a year ago after a juvaderm injection, I was left with two dark spots under my eye. I was told they would go away. They won't! I think it is a hemociterin staining. It has been a year, shouldn't it be gone by now? What do you recommend? Should I go back to the same doctor? I was not happy with him but hold him responsible. Is he? Would he help me? What is your opinion?

A: Bruising after fillers

Hello,

Skin pigmentation and “stains” can be common with certain ethnicities, Mediterranean, Greek and Italian, for example.  Rather then being completely absorbed, bruises can leave hemosiderin deposits in the skin.  After the purplish discoloration fades, light brown discoloration can remain.

The good news is that there are a variety of treatments to improve hemosiderin skin discoloration.  In my practice I typically recommend a trial of a skin lightening agent such as 4% hydroquinone.  For many patients this is sufficient.  If there is still discoloration after a trial period of four weeks a light TCA peel will typically remove the residual pigmentation.

Hope this helps.

How Much Does Juvederm Settle After Injected?

I recently got my lips injected with juvederm and loved how they looked initially. It's been a couple weeks and it seems like the product has settled and that I need more to get my lips back to where I liked them. I'm a little worried that putting more juvederm in will either do they same thing or over fill my lips. What can you tell me about this?

A: Bigger lips

Hello,

Injectable fillers such as Juvederm should last longer then a couple of  weeks.  It is important to remember that any injectable placed into the lips will typically cause moderate swelling.  This swelling peaks around 48 hours and will usually take about 7-14 days to completely resolve.  However, it is conceivable that edema lingers for several weeks to a month.   After surgeries like rhinoplasty or face lifts, edema will typically last six months to a year.

One thing to consider is that it is not the Juvederm wearing off at a couple weeks, but the remainder of the swelling.  The best way to evaluate change would be to compare photographs before and after the procedure.

Hope this helps.
