I Had Upper Eyelid Surgery 4 Days Ago and There Has Been Swelling by my Cheekbones...is This Normal? How long will it take to go away? It's making my face look like my cheekbones are sunken in.

A: swelling after eyelid surgery

In my experience visible swelling after eyelid surgery is universal and normal and often extends into the cheeks; It usually lasts for 1 to 2 weeks and gradually resolves. It rarely causes the lids to close and is rarely very painful. Ice does not usually help after 2 days. Infection can increase the swelling. Elevation of the head helps reduce it even after a few weeks.

Check with your doctor if you are concerned that the swelling is abnormal.

Ptosis in Left Eye After Canthopexy I had a left eye orbital fracture 5 years ago. I had that repaired and then about 5 months ago I had a scar revision, fat graft for upper cheek hollowness, and a canthopexy procedure to fix mild lower eyelid sag. After the canthopexy I feel like my left eye aperture is smaller compared to my right eye either by over correction or by ptosis or by both. Is ptosis correction surgery correct for me? It doesn't affect my vision but does bother me aesthetically. I'm a 30 YO male. Thank you.

A: Ptosis or pseudoptosis?

Your current symptoms likely relate to either what you describe as an orbital fracture, or to a zygomatic fracture. If this was associated with a contour change in the cheek, then you more likely sustained a zygomatic fracture. This may result in endopthalmos, pseudoptosis, and lower lid malposition. Any subsequent soft tissue surgery represents camouflage for what is essentially a problem with the bony orbit. I would be wary of treating the minimal ptosis that you have, given the fact that this likely represents pseudoptosis.

A: Non surgical treatment for eyelids

Puffy lower lids can be camouflaged with make up or by injections with various filler products (fat, Restylane, Juvederm, etc) but these injections are temporary solutions (up to one year).

Droppy(?droopy) lids need surgery.Often the best procedure is a brow (forehead) lift for the upper lids because the cause of the upper lid/brow bulkiness is often brow sagging - (Raise your brows slightly while you look in the mirror and see the benefit)
