How Can I Prevent Bruising from Restylane or Juvederm?

whats the secret to minimizing bruises from wrinkle injections like juvederm or restylane? Should I apply ice to the area of injection?

A: Preventing Bruising from Restylane or Juvederm

There are a few things that you can try to help minimize bruising.  First of all. I request that my patients stop all supplements that may have blood thinning properties. Also, it is important for patients to stop taking aspirin and meds that have aspirin containing qualities. Patients can also start taking Arnica and Bromelain 3-4 days prior to the injections. Ice can also be applied to the area after the treatment.  All of these suggestions may help, but will probably not stop bruising all together.

Juvederm 2 Weeks Before a Christmas Party?

I have a big holiday party coming up, and I want to look fabulous.  I am considering getting some and possibly some filler injections (juvaderm) to spruce up for the party, but I don't want it to look obvious.  I have two weeks.  Do you think I can I pull it off?

A: Juvederm 2 Weeks before a Special Event

Getting Juvederm 2 weeks before an event should be plenty of time to look your best.  I would suggest to stop taking aspirin, fish oil or any other supplements that could cause bleeding and bruising.  I would also suggest that you start taking arnica a few days before the injectable and continue taking it 3 to 5 days after. Also applying ice right after the injections can also help minimize bruising and swelling.

Had Juvederm in Upper Lip and Swelling Has Not Subsided over Two Weeks Later, What Can I Do?

Well, the question pretty much says it all. I had Juvederm injected into my upper lip and now over two weeks later the swelling has still not subsided. People who see me are surprised and ask me what happened, as it looks as if I've been injured. The bruising is gone, but the swelling will not go away. Is there anything I can do? My doctor is now gone on vacation and there is no one else in my small town that can help. Thanks!

A: Too much filler

It is unlikely for one to have swelling after two weeks after juvaderm injections.  So, likely, you are seeing your end result.  And, in this case, it sounds as though it may be a little "too much".  Since your doctor is away, you can either wait until he/she returns and have them address the issue, or you can try to find another board certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon in a neighboring town.

Several remedies are available.  IF your upper lip is just out of proportion to your lower lip, but you like the size, you can have the lower lip injected.  However, if you feel that your upper lip is overall too big, another injection of a product called hyaluronidase can be injected to "melt away" your juvederm.

Lastly, there are rare allergic type reactions to injected fillers.  If your physician injected only a tiny amount of product and the subsequent "swelling" is not proportional to this, you may need to have the hyaluronidase injections to remove the juvederm as well.
