Are other skin rejuvenating procedures such as laser or Juvederm just as effective for the upper lip?
Restylane is great for treating the lines of the upper lip, but you can also use Juvéderm or Perlane. Restylane and Juvéderm are ideal because they have a very soft and natural look and feel and therefore are good for filling the fine lines of the upper lip. The Fraxel or fractional CO2 are lasers also are effective for treating the fine lines of the upper lip. Depending on the severity of the lines you may be a candidate for both laser and fillers.
Does a Restalyn facelift have any side effects for a specific type of skin or condition?
Yes, we call this treatment the “liquid facelift” in our office. Much of what happens in the aging process is deflation of the face. Rejuvenating the face with Sculptra, Restylane, Perlane, Juvéderm and Radiesse will restore volume which can dramatically improve the effects of aging. Restylane, Juvéderm and Perlane are excellent fillers because they contain hyaluronic acid which is naturally occurring in your skin. However, they only last up to six months. For longer-lasting results, I like to use Radiesse (lasts up to a year). Conversely, Radiesse cannot be used around the eyes and mouth because the skin is very thin in those areas and the filler can become bumpy and nodules can occur. Then there is Sculptra which stimulates your own collagen production, however it is a gradual process so you won’t see results for about two to three months. The only down sides to Restylane are the short duration, possible nodules and if injected too superficially, it can cause a bluish discoloration. (The discoloration is a rare complication that hardly ever occurs.) Also, rejuvenation with facial fillers is not only great for women, it is suitable for men, as well!
Can I combine fillers in the same area?
Restylane and Juvéderm are both naturally occurring in the skin and are made of hyaluronic acid. Because they are the same thing it is safe to inject both products. However, each filler is best designated for different conditions. I favor Restylane for fine lines and wrinkles because it is a smoother hyaluronic acid that stays in place and fills the lines elegantly. Juvéderm is better indicated for plumping rather than filling some people prefer Juvéderm for lips since the desired effect is to plump rather than fill.
