In-office dental bleaching didn't whiten my teeth at all. Why did this happen? What other treatments are there available that guarantee whiter teeth?
In office professional whitening does not whiten every one's teeth and not as white as one would like it to get. So some patients get great results, some get OK results and some get none. However , about 80% get great results, 15 % OK results and 5% do not get the result they need with using only one system. They may need to try different systems or combination there of.
WHY? simple ! teeth are not the same even in the same mouth. Look into your own mouth, some teeth are darker, some lighter, some grayer, some yellower . Some teeth have been stained with well water, medicine, systemic disease.... I wish there was a "one size fit all" solution for this.
We were contacted by a journalist of a nationally recognized publication who would like to know if children are having their teeth whitened. Information such as the youngest child you have treated for whitening, the age at which parents report children requesting whitening, methods recommended/not recommended, etc. would all be of interest. If the information you provide is of interest to the journalist we can arrange for an opportunity for you two to talk directly.
Teeth whitening has become one of the most popular and performed procedure in the dental offices. Lately parents bring their childeren as young as 12 to get their teeth whitened. It is recommended that the minimum age for professional teeth whitening using laser or other activating agent to 16 years of age.
A child's deciduous teeth are generally whiter than the adult teeth that follow. As a person ages the adult teeth often become darker due to changes in the mineral structure of the tooth, as the enamel becomes less porous . due to its porosity, one " CAN " get server sensitivity and irreversible damage during the whitening if one is younger than 16. However other factors such as the genetic make up of the teeth, as well as the biological growth of the teenager as opposed to the chronological age are also important considerations to take into account.
I usually recommend very mild strength gels and a take home kit to help with younger individuals, and if the individual is 16 and has strong teeth, I will use a in office professional whitening system for them.
I've had porcelain crowns for 12 years. They have become stained due to the fact I smoke. Are there any solutions to cleaning them or will I have to have them remove?
Porcelain does not hold stains. If yours are, they are either getting stained where the margin of the porcelain is exposed, or the porcelain has been roughened , or the material is not porcelain. Regular cleaning ( I have my patients on cleaning every 3 months) should take are of it, and get a touch up bleaching kit to clean up the crevices, and the marginal areas.
