What is a midface lift? How is that different from a regular facelift or a mini face-lift?
Mid-face lift is also called cheek lift and essentially is release and elevation of the cheek muscle, fat and skin up towards the eyes to restore the fullness to the upper part of the cheek which is the 2 cm ( 3/4 inch ) segment below the eyelashes. This area could appear hollow with buldging of orbital fat pockets due to resorption of the soft tissues of cheeks and/or lack of strong cheek bones as we mature. The latter is seen in youger persons too. The surgery may take no more than one hour to perform on its own, however, other procedures are done to rejuvenation the whole face such as endoscopic forehead lift and lower face/neck lift to complement each other. Alternative to this procedure is cheek fillers, fat or otherwise, as well as implants. Temorary fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane are good way to see how one would like the result of of fuller cheeks or lower eyelid areas.
I am male 39 and can see some early signs of skin sagging on my face. The skin over cheeks is lax and there is no definition in the cheek area. I consulted a cosmetic surgeon in London who advised me that grafting fat to cheek area will be a good alternative to cheek lift. Then I visited another one who mentioned that given the amount of laxity too much fat transfer maybe required and that I would be better off with a cheek lift. What is the view of surgeons here?
I would recommend filler injection first. This may include Juvederm or Restylane that last anywhere from 6-12 months by a physician who is very familiar with filler injection into the periorbital ( around the eyes ) areas. This will allow you to see how you would like the result and if you don't, it will go away later and can opt for the cheek lift which will bring up all the fullness you have in your lower cheek up against your lower eyes.
I am 31 years old. I have extremely hollow flat cheeks, hollow eyes, and now pre jowls and lots of new lines forming and dents on chin. My skin is very much lacking elasticity as it feels loose and no firmness. All of this happenend within 1 year (ever since I turned 30). I believe I have prematurely aged (8 to 10) years sooner than normal as I have been a smoker. I am extremely depressed about these changes. I used to have a heart shape face and now it looks long & flat, pre jowls. Help?
Thank you for the photo.
I agree with the first step being cessation of smoking. Whether you decide of fillers or a mid-face lift/implants, smoking will compromise the result.
You are young, so longevity is an issue for you. None of the options available will last forever. Fillers may last 1-3 years. The good thing with fillers is the result is eventually reversible and you can start slow and add more fillers for a customized volume increase. A mid-face lift may last several years, but eventually a "touch-up" procedure may be required. Implants are permanent, but with age, there will be some bone resorption which may reduce the fullness of the area.
Ultimately, this is a decision you should make with your surgeon. Most likely, a combination of therapies may be required for the best result.
Best of Luck.
