What is the Best Preparation for a Successful Body Lift?

What preparatory measures like weight loss, exercise or adjusting medication dosage will maximize the probability of a successful body lift? What medications can slow down the process of healing? Are their things that can be done before and after a body lift for the most effective healing?

A: Preparation Advice

There are many different steps in preparing for a body lift procedure. First is consult a board certified plastic surgeon that specializes in body contouring procedures. Second is to make sure you understand your surgeon’s procedural plan. Third would be to understand all the risks and complications of your procedure. Fourth would be to have a history and physical and labs drawn by your primary care physician in order to ensure your body can endure your planned procedure(s). Next is to get on a nutritional supplement plan provided by your surgeon. Last but not least would be to make sure you have proper caretaking prepared for when you get out of surgery. There are so many other suggestions I could make for you, but it all depends on what procedures will be a part of your body lift.

Body Contouring or Body Lift?

For those who have lost over 150 pounds, should an overall body contouring plan be considered to just a body lift? Are there certain procedures that are more effective and more affordable than a body lift after massive weight loss?

A: Body Contouring vs Body Lift

Congratulations on your weight loss journey. As you may have experienced, losing 150 plus pounds will lead to having excess skin on your body. This is very uncomfortable for many patients and can even lead to rashes and infections in certain areas.

Body contouring essentially is a component of a body lift. The body lift is designed specifically for the weight loss patient, so I do believe having just a few procedures may not leave you with a desirable result. I have seen some patients who do a few procedures at a time and wait to do the other procedures when they have a budget for it.

I advise you to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon that specializes in body contouring procedures. Best of luck to you.

At What Point is It Ok for Me to Get a Body Lift, and Will It Affect my Continuing Weight Loss?

Should I reach my absolute goal weight before considering a body lift?

A: Weight loss prior to body contouring

I encourage all of my patients to wait until they have achieved a stable weight for a period of three months. Ideal body weight and goal weights are medical markers which are not realistic goals for some people.

You do not want to have a body contouring operation and lose another 20 to 30 lbs. Although you will always look better than if you hadn't had the surgery, you will lose some of the cosmetic benefits as the skin does not tighten after that amount of loss.

Seek out a board certified plastic surgeon with experience in contouring after weight loss to help plan your surgeries and discuss the appropriate timing.

Good luck and I hope this was helpful.
