I had light brown spots on the side of eyes and a skin laser spa recommended for a Fraxel treatment to improve the melasma and big pores on my nose/face. The Fraxel left me with even darker sports all around eyes and no improvement on my pores.
Would you please advise what else can be done to treat these brown spots after the Fraxel and improve the big pore size? I'm 40 years old Asian. Thank you!
Hi,
It sounds like you may have what we call temporary post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after your Fraxel Restore treatment. It is best treated with a bleaching cream that includes hydroquinone. We treat many Asian patients with Fraxel Restore and we prepare them by putting them on a bleaching cream before Restore and occasionally after Restore to prevent PIH. With Asian skin there are also optimal Restore laser settings to achieve your desired result. The good thing is that your pigmentation is not permanent and will go away. The best thing for you to do is to start a cream with hydroquinone and use a sunscreeen with a minimum SPF of 45 that contains a physical sunblock like zinc or titanium.

It has been 2 days since my first Fraxel Restore treatment. My face feels like sandpaper and has a pattern of tiny brown spots on it. Is this normal, and will this go away?
Hi,
The concept of the Fraxel Restore is that each of the microscopic laser spots is separated from the other by normal skin so that there is no full ablation of the skin. What you are seeing is the laser spots as they come to the surface naturally and exfoliate typically 4-5 days after your treatment. By seven days, all the spots on the face should gently and naturally fall off. We recommend not exfoliating yourself since it will prolong any redness you may have and potentially irritate your fresh new skin!

Will Tazorac help with collagen rebuilding after Fraxel procedure, just as they say Retin-A does? If so, how is it possible?
Hi,
Any of the retinoids including retin-A and tazorac stimulate collagen production. They all have varying degrees of irritation with them based on their strength. What is important to realize is that after Fraxel Restore, your skin is much more sensitive and in a sense like baby skin. You can use a retinoid after Fraxel Restore but cautiously. We recommend waiting 2-3 weeks before resuming any products that could irritate the skin like Vitamin C, glycolic, or retinoid after Fraxel Restore. For Fraxel Repair, we wait even longer, a minimum of one month.
Best,
Dr. Liu
