Will I Need More Than a Tummy Tuck?

I am a 49 year old male, who has lost 245 LBS, I have seen four doctors, two think I could get by with a tummy tuck, one thinks a lower body lift, the other a tummy tuck with a horizontal cut. I have had three past surgeries for hernia repair, only one doctor said he would like to see reports from those surgeries. I like him and the one who would do a lower body lift and tummy tuck, he is also much cheaper, will have chest done as well, here is my photo any advise would be nice.

Thank you for the photo; although it does not show your back at all which would determine if you would need a body lift.  I think you will definately benefit from an abdominoplasty, but it would be best for the surgeons that you have met with to show you examples of what results you could expect with one surgery vs another so you could know if the adominoplasty would give you enough results that you would be happy without the horizonal component or the body lift.  You definately need your groin area lifted, and your chest addressed, so be sure to check their experience level and look at photos of all the procedures before choosing your doctor- price isnt the only factor-sometimes you get what you pay for!

Plastic Surgery Complications After Gastric Bypass?

I had gastric bypass surgery on 4/10. I have lost 133lbs. My gastric bypass surgery had complications. I had to have a second surgery to fix a large leak in my stomach pouch, which left me with a large scar down the center of my belly. I also developed a large seroma under my incision and had to pack it with gauze for 3 weeks. I know that I am going to need an upper and lower body lift in order to remove all the skin. My concern is, will I also have complications with plastic surgery?

A: body lift surgery and complications

After your weight loss has plateaued after gastric bypass, then you can consider a body contouring procedure such as a body lift.  Your weight should be stable for at least six months and all your wounds should be fully healed from the gastric bypass surgery.  It will be important to obtain medical clearance from your primary care physician to determine that it is safe to undergo the body lift- chest x-ray, EKG, lab tests.  An important lab test will be your albumin, which is a protein that serves as an indicator of your overall nutrition and is critical for adequate wound healing.

The most important complication with the surgery is called a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) which is a blood clot that can form in your legs. It is important to walk early after surgery to minimize this risk. Your surgeon may also consider giving you Lovenox, which is an anti-coagulant after surgery to prevent this from occurring. Seromas are minimized by leaving drains in place for one to two weeks.

Weight Loss After Body Lift

If I lose weight after my body lift procedure, will the skin become loose again? I'm not really planning on losing extra weight after my surgeries, but if I were to lose weight during the recovery period (I hear body lift recovery is pretty harsh), would that ruin the work?

A: weight loss after body contouring (body lift)

Ideally you should try to maintain your body weight after a body lift or any body contouring procedure (tummy tuck or arm lift).  The reason for this is to maintain your skin tone and not loosen the tight result which was obtained during your surgery.  A mild amount of weight loss (10 lbs) if done gradually, should not affect your result too much.  However a larger or more sudden amount of weight loss can possibly compromise your cosmetic result.

Discuss this in more detail with your plastic surgeon prior to planning your body lift.

Best wishes,
