Is It Common to Use Local Anesthesia for Brachioplasty Revision?

I had a Brachioplasty (Arm Lift) done in early 2009. The surgeon and I agreed a revision would be a good idea to remove the remaining excess hanging skin. He has suggested doing this in his office with local anesthesia...I will be awake. Yikes..

Is it routine to do such a procedure in an office (not a surgery center) with only a local? I think if I see him cutting my arm flesh off I'll pass out! Has anyone removed excess skin all the way along the length of both arms in an office with just a local? Thanks for your input!

A: brachioplasty revision can be done under local in an OR

A brachioplasty scar can be reivsed under local in an office setting, however if you will require a more involved skin excision and or fat removal you will likely need to have this done in an operating room.  This will help prevent infection and if you need more anesthesia, it can be done in a safer fashion this way.

Please consult a board certified plastic surgeon before undergoing your revision.

Arm Lift Scar Position Favored by Most Women?

I know it depends greatly on the individual, but could you give me an idea of which Arm Lift scar position is favoured by most women, inner arm incision or incision at the junction of the inner and posterior aspects of the arm? I read that the skin on the back of the arm is tougher than inner arm skin and the scar may be pulled more centrally to the back of the arm. Is that a frequent complication? Thank you.

A: Scar location for an arm lift

The location of the scar for an arm lift (brachioplasty) varies depending on a patient's anatomy and skin laxity.  Generally the scar is located on the medial or inner aspect of the arm, extending from the elbow to the armpit.  Sometimes this scar can located slightly more posteriorly or towards the back of the arm.  The goal is to provide a good contour while at the same time concealing the scar when the arm is down by the patient's side.  Regardless of where the scar is located, patient's must realize the scar can potentially be permanently dark in color and may be slightly thick.  This is a tradeoff , meaning you will have a better contour but may have a noticeable scar.

Please consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to determine if you are a candidate for this procedure and to discuss in detail the position of the final scar.

How Long Do Arm Lift Results Last?

If I get an arm lift, how long would the results of the surgery last?  Would there be anything that could happen that would make the saggy skin on my arms come back after the arm lift?

A: Arm lift results longevity

If you maintain your weight after an arm lift (brachioplasty), the results will be long-lasting. It's difficult to say the results will be "permanent" because skin is constantly undergoing changes due to gravity and the aging process. However, if performed properly in a good candidate, the results should last for many years. The most important factor is to be at a stable body weight, before and after the procedure, so your skin laxity does not change significantly.

Most patients are quite pleased with this procedure, however you must be willing to accept the scars, which can take up to a year or longer to fade.

Please consult with a board certified plastic surgeon experienced in body contouring procedures prior to scheduling an arm lift.
