I'm considering a tummy tuck with liposuction. I read the results of a study that the fat cells redistribute after such procedures. My question is do these procedures make weight loss more difficult after surgery? Is there a correlation to the weight of the fat cells removed and weight gain after surgery? What is the optimum bmi of body fat procedure for a tummy tuck? Can Is it possible to achieve optimum results from a tummy tuck with out liposuction of areas such as the flanks?
Tummy tuck will address the appearance of the front of the abdomen. Liposuction is added to the procedure when the flanks or love handles appear full. If your flanks are not full then liposuction is not required. When liposuction is done in an area the number of fat cells is reduced. Fat cells have a large storage capacity and so weight gain will still occur in these preferred storage areas. Body contouring surgery does not make future weight loss harder and fat cells do not redistribute. More commonly contour irregularities in the area of liposuction will become obvious with significant weight gain.
The ideal BMI for all body contouring procedures is as close to 25 as you can get. Complications increase when the BMI is 30 and with the most significant complications occurring when BMI is over 35.
Discuss these concerns with your board certified plastic surgeon. I hope this was helpful
I overweight and I have a lot of body fat. I really want to get this done before I get married next year. My weight is about 230 and my height is 5'5 . I really need to get most of the fat off. How much would this cost me?
Based on your current height and weight, I recommend losing weight prior to having elective cosmetic surgery. Once you have reached a stable weight, you will then be a better candidate for plastic surgery, such as a tummy tuck or liposuction. Consult with a board certified plastic surgeon before considering any body contouring procedures. You may also want to consult your primary care physician for some help with setting weight loss goals and strategies. Best wishes, Dr.Bruno
I'm 30 y/o 5'4 127 lbs and have 4 kids. I dont have much bulging I just want my waist back, I have like 2 strech marks under my belly button and my skin is not wrinkly. I really dont want a tummy tuck because of the scar, I dont have any scars, but I also dont want lose wrinkly skin. Which would be a better choice?
This is difficult to answer without examining you in person however if you are not prepared for the scar of a tummy tuck then liposuction may be better for you. I would consult with an experienced board certified plastic surgeon to see which procedure is best based on your skin elasticity and anatomy. Sometimes the best contour is the procedure which leaves more of a scar, but this depends on each patient.
