If Your Breasts Are Heterogenously Dense, is It Safe to Get Breast Implants?
Heterogeneously dense breasts refers to the volume of breast tissue and how it appears on a mammogram. Young woman have denser breasts and they become less dense with age. Screening studies and routine exams are important ways of monitoring breast tissue for the development of disease.
It is perfectly safe to have breast implants placed with heterogenously dense breasts. This does not impact your incidence of developing a disease. Although implants will change the way your mammogram needs to be done, studies show there is no delay in diagnosis of breast cancer in woman with breast implants. There are many other modalities currently available to image the breast if there are concerns. These include ultrasound and MRI to name a few.
Have this discussion with your board certified plastic surgeon to help allay your fears. All the best and good luck.
I'm 5'5" and 130lbs with a 32" ribcage wearing a 34A that I barely fill. I'm getting implants in 2 weeks and my doctor initially recommended 304cc implants. I'm worried its going to make me top heavy and my boyfriend is convinced if I get the 304's that I will look fake and is pressing for the 286's for the "natural" look. I'm agonizing over this decision to the point of obsession. My doctor is wonderful, but very hands off in the decision making part. Need help PLEASE
Do not obsess over this. The difference between the implants you have chosen is very small. In fact, most people are only able to see a difference in 30 cc increments.
The key is communicating well with your surgeon. Show pictures of breasts you like and those you don't. I use sizers in the operating room and sit my patients up during surgery to determine if the implant meets our mutual goals.
It sounds like you have a good relationship with your surgeon and the implants chosen are in a very narrow range. Review your concerns again to assure yourself you are both on the same page.
Good luck.
What Are is the Percentage Rate of Getting Capsular Contracture with Silicone Implants
The rate of capsular contracture with silicone implants is about 10%. It is believed that this rate is even slightly lower if your incision is placed under the breast (in the breast crease) compared to an areolar incision. Having the implant placed behind or under the pectoral muscle has a lower rate than above the muscle. Consult with a board certified plastic surgeon for more specific details regarding capsular contracture.
Best wishes,
