How Long Should One Wait Between Septoplasty and Rhinoplasty?

How long should one wait between having a Septoplasty and a Rhinoplasty or Chin implant? I would like to have it all done at the same time, but my insurance will not cover a Septoplasty if it's done by a cosmetic surgeon.

A: Why was your septoplasty not done at the time of your rhinoplasty?

Hi Ims0413;

You are describing a rather unfortunate episode.  Frankly, it is important that a  surgeon do a complete nasal examination prior to the surgery to determine if, in fact, other things, besides changing the outside of the nose, need be corrected.  If you are said to need a septoplasty now, then you probably needed it before the surgery, unless the surgery created some change.  Was your nose crooked before the surgery?  Without having checked it before, it is hard to know.  If you are saying that your breathing was not a problem, but now it is, then, mostly likely, the septum may have shifted.  It was not necessarily the surgeon's fault.

The answer to how long you must wait really depends on how much was done cosmetically.  I cannot answer that without viewing the inside of your nose and evaluating the incision, etc.  Frankly, it is probably safer to wait at least six months after your surgery because there are going to be some minor changes and, perhaps, the crookedness will improve spontaneously, or it may worsen.

In any event, it is generally wiser to wait.  Some surgeons would wait, even up to nine months.  I know you are not happy with the difficulty breathing, but you do not want to do anything hastily that might negatively impact the outcome.

I Have Exposed Septum Cartlidge After Polyp Surgery a Year Ago. Is Any Exposed Cartlidge Normal in the Nose?

I Have Exposed Septum Cartlidge After Polyp Surgery a Year Ago. Is Any Exposed Cartlidge Normal in the Nose?

A: No, but usually it heals and covers itself up so see an ENT

No, but usually it heals and covers itself up.  So if you still have exposed cartilage there must be another problem going on inside of the nose to prevent it from healing, so you should have a visit with a board-certified ENT.

I Have a Fractured Nose & Damaged Septum, Dr. Says Only Septum Should Be Corrected, Is this Right?

I asked a question few wks ago about being pregnant & maybe having a fractured nose. Went to an ENT & my nose is fractured & my septum has scar tissue that's already curving. I can't get it fixed til the baby's born, but the Dr doesn't think I should worry about fixing the fracture, she just wants to fix my septum. I want both fixed, bc I have a small dent in my upper left side of my nose. What would I need done in order to fix both problems?

  After you deliver and are done breast feeding, there should be no reason that you couldn't have a combined Septo-Rhinoplasty that would do both IMHO.  The Rhinoplasty would address any deviations externally of the nasal cartilage and/or bone for nasal refinement, while the Septoplasty would reduce any nasal obstruction.  Be sure your Rhinoplasty Surgeon understands and follows the proper aesthetics of facial (and nasal) beauty for the creation of a naturally, more attractive nose.
