Permanent Damage from Sunburn While on Accutane? I've been on Accutane for about 3 months. Unfortunately, I got badly sunburned last week while playing golf. To make matters worse, I went running this morning in pants. Now my legs have many small blisters or little air pockets! What should I do? Have I caused permanent damage?

A: Most sunburns from Accutane won't cause permanent damage

Sunburns are common while on accutane but rarely cause any permanent damage. Use a good cortisone lotion several times a day to help resolve the sunburn as well as take aspirin or advil for the anti inflammatory effects and pain relief and see your doctor.

You may start accutane after the rhinoplasty incisions are healed. Clear this with your surgeon. This pharmaceutical company that first manufactured this drug no longer releases this medication because there have been reports of serious cases of inflammatory bowl disease attributed to Accutane. Some companies are now making a generic form, but discuss possible complications with your doctor. Although there are wonderful results in the treatment of some forms of acne, I am concerned about your safety.

It is very important to not be aggressive with any surgical or scar removal procedures while on accutane. It is generally recommended to wait 8-12 months after finishing accutane before doing any surgical procedure, or one that would cause damage to the top layer of the skin. In that regard, CO2 laser resurfacing would be a great choice for many acne scar patients, but if you've done accutane, even this is something I would wait for almost a year after finishing accutane before doing. Simply waiting will ensure that you have a minimal risk of complications.
