Sorprano or Nd:Yag for Type IV Light Pakistani Skin and Black Hair?

I'm debating on whether to go with the Sorprano (which claims to be virtually pain-free) at a local spa, or go with an experienced cosmetic surgeon who uses Nd:Yag and has had no experience of permenant side-effects with someone of my skin-colouring.

A: Laser Hair Removal for Ethnic Skin

Laser Hair Removal for Ethnic skin is not to be taken lightly. Post-treatment hyperpigmentation can persist for long time. Therefore, laser hair removal for ethnic skin should only be done under supervision of a board-certified dermatologist so that adverse effects of laser procedure can be averted and/or to be treated appropriately. Soprano and Lumenis Lightsheer lasers are based on Diode laser which is an okay laser wavelength for ethnic skin but not the safest. Elite MPX is the safest Nd:Yag laser hair removal for ethnic skin. Nevertheless, ice compress should be applied right after any laser procedure for ethnic skin to minimize post-treatment hyperpigmentation (PIH).

What's the Best Laser for Clearing Red and Brown Folliculitis 'Scars' (PIH)?

I'm 35 years old female, and used to shave my legs. I have many red and brown marks near my bikini line left following ingrown-hair/folliculitis inflammations. Some marks are very old and others are new. It bothers me so much. I want to get rid of them with laser. What is the best laser for treating these marks? Will it be the same laser for both reddish and brown marks? Is purpuric reaction inevitable following the treatment? Would it be realistic to expect a single treatment?

A: Laser treatment for folliculitis scars

First, the underlying trigger of ingrown hairs or folliculitis needs to be treated with Nd:Yag hair laser removal, particularly if there is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Subsequent pigmented scar can be minimized by topical application of prescription-strength hydroquinone and/or Nd:Yag laser such as GenesisPlus or Spectra Laser. Purpuric reaction is typical of VBeam or pulse dye laser (PDL) but not of Nd:Yag laser. Unfortunately, it may take a few laser treatments few weeks apart to achieve optimal clinical outcome.

Subcision for Chicken Pox Marks?

I have chicken pox marks that i have had since my collage days. Now that im 40 im looking to have them addressed and had a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon in my area. She has recommended subcision with a laser treatment. Would this be an effective way of removing the marks? they do look like rolling box scars and are quite sizeable.

A: Subcision combined with laser helpful for acne or chicken pox scars

Subcision by an experienced board-certified dermatologist is helpful in releasing fibrous scar tissue that may be tugging downward existing acne or chicken pox scars. I recommend consideration of subcision prior to Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing or nonablative laser scar revision utilizing GenesisPlus or Spectra Laser to maximize clinical benefit. This is particularly helpful for ethnic skin as laser scar revision parameter needs to be a bit more conservative to minimize risk of post-treatment hyperpigmentation and thus subcision can augment the clinical result.
