Redness and Crusting After Glycolic Peel

I just received a glycolic facial peel yesterday for the first time ever. Today, I woke up and saw my chin area bright red, scabby-looking, dry, rough, kind of sore, even. It looks very nasty. I was told at the spa there would be no side effects the next day. Is this going to heal? Will I have lasting skin damage from this? How long do you think it will take to heal? Are there any products that I can use on it to help it heal, like an antibotic ointment? Any product I should avoid?

A: Post-op recovery following chemical peel

Most of the time, post-op recovery from light glycolic acid peel should be minimal. Significant and prolonged irritation sometimes is contributed by usage of topical retinoid or exfoliants prior to chemical peel. To minimize irritation from 'lunchtime' chemical peels or microdermabrasion, back off your skincare routine other than sunscreen, moisturizer and gentle cleansers for 3-4 days prior to procedure.

How Long Before You See Final Results from Glycolic Peel?

I had a glycolic peel. Will my skin carry on improving days later?

A: Numerous glycolic acid peels necessary for clinical improvement

Glycolic acid peels 30% to 70% are commonly performed by aesthetician. This can be helpful as part of acne or melasma treatment under the supervision of a board-certified dermatologist. While there is minimal downtime in the hands of an experienced clinical aesthetician, it may take 10 to 20 treatments before one can perceive a significant difference in texture of the skin. If one has a higher expectation of greater clinical improvement for fine lines, acne scarring and/or sun damage, one should consider 35%-50% TCA chemical peel or fractional CO2 laser performed by an experienced board-certified dermatologist and be prepared for a longer down time, typically a week.
