I am referring to all lasers for acne scars, from the original CO2 to the newer non-ablative YAG lasers. I have been hearing varying opinions on this. I've been told it's permanent from some doctors, others have told me it's not. I've heard from patients that they've had lasting results (beyond a year), others on message forums have told me it's not. Lasers are expensive, why would I keep doing them if they won't have lasting effects? Can I please get a straight answer? I just want the truth.
Hi DRaGZ. We would like to turn it around on you a bit. We treat many types of acne scars at our practiced, colored and textured (indented, bumpy) and we use many different options to treat them. So, the answer to your question can differ based on the type of acne scars you have.
We use Erbium laser resurfacing (indented), kenalog injections (bumpy or atrophic), hydroquinone (brown) and V-star lasers (red) for our treatments. For some of these treatments you can get long lasting or permanent results (Erbium laser resurfacing for indented scars) and for others we may not - hydroquinone for brown scars will not be permanent if the patient gets more acne.
So, we would love for there to be a simple answer, but there may not be. Your best bet is to go to multiple consultations so that you can developed a balanced opinion about your options and the chances that the results will be permanent. We are located in Los Angeles and would be happy to see you for a free consultation. See the link below for our before and after pictures.
Hello, I am at my wits end trying to figure out my face. I have all of these what appear to be blackheads or sebaceous filaments. However, I have come to the conclusion that they are simply tiny pitted or icepick scars. It seems like they have become more noticeable over time due to several chemical peels I have done at home (TCA, glycolic, salicylic). I have tried practically everything, including a dermaroller, numerous exfoliating products, Nulase handheld laser, and so on. Any advice?
Hi Jeff. It seems you have tried a lot of home treatments for your large pores, but have you consulted a dermatologist or plastic surgeon regarding laser resurfacing? It seems you are trying a lot of home care procedures, but generally speaking, these types of treatments have very limited potential vs. a procedure like laser resurfacing.
We would suggest you consider Full or fractional laser resurfacing with Erbium or CO2 lasers. Good luck.
What's the best non-ablative laser for acne scars, specifically "crater" type scarring on my temples and a few on my cheeks. I have brown skin(Hispanic), prone to hyperpigmentation, so I'm looking for something that doesn't burn the skin.
Hi Nelo. For the type of scars you are describing, we would generally not recommend a non-ablative (no downtime) laser. The reason is "crater" typoe indented scars are difficult to revise with non-ablative lasers. Depending on how old the scars are and how old you are, you may be able to get some improvement, but generally for those type of scars, we suggest ablative (downtime) lasers.
If you do decide to go with no-downtime lasers, we have successfully used the Palomar Q-Yag V and Aramis lasers. You can find a link to pictures of acne scar treatments with these lasers below. We are located in Los Angeles and offer a free consultation.
