Can I Get a Nose Job for Free if I Have Been Referred to by a Doctor for my Nose? I recently broke my nose and had to get surgery to fix it but my cartilage needs to be reconstructed so I have been referred to a cosmetic surgeon. Am I able to get a free nose job if I have already been referred to one? Will he shave down parts of my nose I dislike?

A: Insurance does not cover cosmetic portion of nasal surgery

Insurance will cover the reconstructive part of your surgery - that related to your fracture - but will not cover the cosmetic component. Your surgeon will charge for this as will the facility and the anesthesiologist - this is not done gratis and for many reasons.

Can an Alarplasty Be Done Under Local Anasthesia? Im curious as to whether alarplasty can be done under local anasthesia? Can any rhinoplasty be done this way?

A: Limited Rhinoplasty Nasal Reductions are Very Possible With Local

I would say that most patients will tolerate reduction alar surgeries under local. By that I refer to techniques designed to reduce the size of the tip, refine the tip, reduce nostril size etc. Weir incisions and alar base reductions are commonly completed under a local anesthetic in an operative suite. Composite grafts or other surgeries to increase the tip size, projection, etc., are usually best performed under a general for the comfort and safety of the patient. Great question.

Crooked Nose: Covered by Insurance? (photo) I have a crooked nose. I think I have a deviated septum because I find it hard to breathe,mostly at night. I also have a messed up sense of smell. I don't know if that has anything to do with the crookedness. But I find it hard to smell things. I told my doctor and she checked my nose but said she doesn't think it is serious enough for surgery. I hate how my nose looks though. It is crooked and the tip is boulbous, I also have a bump. Is it possible to have the insurance cover my surgery?

A: Insurance companies and nasal surgery - what may be covered

At best, insurance companies will cover surgery related to the breathing issues regarding your nose such as the septum. They will not cover anything that constitutes cosmetic surgery such as fixing your bulbous tip.

You should go to a board certified plastic surgeon who could assess your situation and them make the appropriate recommendations.
