How do medical products like Alloderm aid in breast reconstruction procedures?
As you have read from other plastic surgeons, Alloderm is processed human tissue devoid of cells including immune markers which has greatly improved the quality, predictabilty and options in breast reconstruction. It can provide for a more predictable placement of an implant or expander in am immediate reconstruction as well as increased tissue thickness. It also allows for more precision in the creation/preservation of the fold at the lower part of the breast.
Studies have also shown that it can lower the risk/extent of capsular contracture around the implant even in irradiated tissue which is great news for many.
I am going to have prophylactic mastectomy with reconstruction. The plastic surgeon that I've consulted told me that he uses gummy bear implants. He uses Mentor silicone gel smooth round high profile. Are those implants considered gummy bear implants and can they leak? I am really unsure as to what to pick and I'm told that I can only get that type of implant through my insurance. Also, I'm 5.0" and 102 lbs. What size would you recommend? I'm currently a small b cup. Thank you.
The Mentor high profile silicone implants are a cohesive silicone gel implant but they are not the "gummy bear" implants. These latter implants are firmer, form stable implants that have not been FDA approved and are therefore not available for implantation in this country. Only a very limited number of plastic surgeons are involved in a clinical study involving these implants and according to what you state, this physician does not appear to be one of those.
Implant size can't be determined by your present cup size, weight and height alone and even with pictures. A comprehensive examination would be needed to better determine what is appropriate for you.
My implants slipped..I am not sure if the internal stitches tore? Now for a number of years the implant is definately slouched down in the pocket. Both my arms from armpit to elbow have lots loose stretched skin I am seriously thinking about having them removed and not replaced. I know at this point the soft tissue under the arms cannot be fixed. When I use my upper body I get severe back and neck pain, tight chest as well and my arms weak
It sounds like you have a lot of issues that are not directly or specifically related to your breast reconstruction. My suggestion would be to first see a reputable board certified plastic surgeon who can assess both the changes in your reconstructed breasts as well as the tissue laxity elsewhere.
It should be possibly to effectively correct the displacment of the implants. Regarding the excess skin of your arms, an arm lift (brachioplasty) may effectively and pleasingly improve the situation.
