I was meant to have a jaw surgery at the age of 17 but the doctor said that I would be fine with fixed braces, Im 22 now and looking to get braces fitted in but Im being told that because I have a tongue thrust there is high possibility that my teeth may go back to how they are now. I was just wondering what would be best, should I get fixed braces, Invisaligns or do I need surgery?
I have a major issue with tongue thrust. In addition, the large gaps at the bottom of my teeth cause me to cut or get my tongue caught. I end up with cut or a swollen sore tongue daily. Are there any recommendations for treatment? It is also impacting my speech now. I'm not sure why this started but it did start suddenly. I am a middle aged adult over 40.
I've already had braces once, now I have a U Hawley with a sort of cage to keep my tongue back that I wear at night. Now, apparently, my bite has opened up again. They said I need to wear my stupid retainer even earlier into the evening. I hate this retainer enough and it's a serious boot to my self confidence whenever I put it in. I feel like a dog with a muzzle on. They said my gap is 1.5 mm- used to be less than 1. It hasn't affected my speech or anything but they said I had to fix it.
I had braces as a teenager, but despite using a retainer, my gap returned. My bite has never met in the front, but it wasn't until I changed dentists as an adult that the issue was addressed. My new dentist said that my braces were a waste of money and that the tongue thrust should have been corrected before braces were applied. I would like to correct it because it causes a lisp and difficulties eating (biting through), but I don't think I'm up for traditional braces again. What are my options?
I'm a 34yr male, 15yrs ago I had bonding placed on my two front teeth to close a very large gap. I never liked it because it made my teeth look huge and the coloration is off and now there is a small space now. So I've decided to finally decided to get braces. I'm going to get the clear ceramic ones. I should have them on in a couple weeks. I was always told I had a large tongue/tongue thurst should I be worried. I was told I would have to wear them for 2yrs total cost is 6000.
Had braces as a kid, after I got them off my ortho said I had an over jet due to tongue thrusting. He kept me coming back until I was 22, gave me swallowing exercises to do, special retainers, etc. I stopped going because it didn't seem like it was working. Now I'm 28 and I feel like my over jet has gotten worse but I don't know which treatment (if any) would work since the apparent cause is tongue thrusting. I don't even know if the over jet is big enough to need treatment.
