Who is that Masked Man (or Woman)? How well do you know your doctor?
The American Association of Plastic Surgeons recently released the findings of a poll they conducted and the results are somewhat disturbing...
ONLY 28% of patients had verified their surgeon's credentials before undergoing surgery.
91% were aware of what to expect prior to their procedures, but less than 50% were knowledgeable about the side effects after their nip or tuck... side effects which included nausea, and possible complications such as blood clotting.
80% ofthe plastic surgery patients polled were pleased with their results, but 40% wished they had done more research about their respective procedures and doctors.
One of the reasons patients didn't speak up is because they were uncomfortable asking their surgeons questions.
While it may be intimidating to question your doctor, there is nothing more important than your health and well-being. If your doctor intimidates you, he/she may not be the best fit for you. Make sure to be assertive and ask the right questions before undergoing any surgical procedure, so you know what to expect and are happy with the results of your surgery.
RealSelf is a great forum for discussion of cosmetic procedures as well, as it enables you to reach out to other patients and learn their experiences with doctors, surgeons and results.
