The rise
They might not admit it exactly, but Aussies brought the rest of the world the
“muffin top." The Oz sitcom "Kath and Kim" is cited as the source of the term that now refers to the roll of fat that overflows out of the top of low-cut or too-tight jeans (and recently, shoe overflow!)
Many years later, muffin top is climbing the charts for Google trends, with oddly, Boston named the leading city for “muffin top” searches.

Until recently, new laser treatments were marketed only to doctors. None of us could come close to naming a laser skin device.
That all changed with the runaway success of the skin tightening device Thermage, and most recently SmartLipo. Smartlipo is a laser liposuction device that has patients calling doctors to get SmartLipo's version of fat removal. We see this demand in terms of traffic in the RealSelf.com community. Over 100,000 unique page views are generated on RealSelf.com each month by consumers researching SmartLipo.
Lifesculpt dreams of becoming the next SmartLipo
Rival laser device makers want to capture this consumer-driven word of mouth since no marketing method sells a device better to doctors then patients showing up for consultations asking for it by name.
Thanks to a catchy name and lots of media attention, Smart Lipo has become a popular form of liposuction. Smart Lipo is often considered by women who aren’t quite looking for a Tummy Tuck, but aren’t quite satisfied with their shape.
After paying $4,500 for Smart Lipo, RealSelf.com reader Kristi, faces disappointing Smart Lipo results—we interviewed her to find out what she expected, and what she learned from the experience.
RealSelf (RS): I have to be honest—you don’t exactly look like you need lipo—you look great! What made you decide to go for it?
Kristi: Well, I have a son who’s 16 and a daughter who is 7. I’m 37, about 5 feet tall and around 110 lbs. I work out every day. But I’ve always had that little “pouch”…and I just had that insecurity. I was going through a divorce as well, and feeling very insecure. Maybe I was being too much of a perfectionist. But I thought that Smart Lipo would give me that “20-something” stomach. I wanted that hip-hugger jeans look.
Cynosure, the Boston-based manufacturer of SmartLipo, reported significant growth for the 3rd quarter of 2008, msn money reports; "revenues increased to 38.2 million for the 3rd quarter of 2008 from 31.5 million" for the same period last year.
President and CEO Michael Davin says it is their eighth consecutive quarter of profitability despite the difficult economic environment.
The company's newest technological innovation - the Smartlipo MPX aesthetic laser system - is a major contributor to their success. Davin says the company even sold the product at a lower price than originally planned, and still remained profitable due to other strategies for building their existing customer base.
Sales of the new MPX systems jumped from 46 percent of all Smartlipo sales to 73 percent, just in the third quarter.
Thanks to recent publicity on Fox News and the Today Show, SmoothShapes may be catching on as the next big thing for cellulite and circumferential reduction. Boston plastic surgeon Elliot Lach, MD has brought both SmartLipo and SmoothShapes into his Burlington medical spa and hired another cosmetic physician.

The Denver plastic surgeon who was recently featured on Nightline for his "Hi-Def" Abs using VASER Liposelection is also now promoting a new version of SmartLipo called the MPX.
According to the Cynosure website, the MPX is an upgrade from the previous single-wavelength version of SmartLipo, because it offers a combination wavelength of 1064nm and 1320nm.
Dr. John Millard's plastic surgery blog announces that the surgeon performed his first SmartLipo surgery on June 18, 2008.
Two Denver plastic surgeons caution in a June 28 press release against choosing a liposuction provider based on flashy advertising or claims that "the method they use is instrumental in a patient's cosmetic outcome."
Spokane's KREM 7 News reported on SmartLipo, the alternative to traditional liposuction, which uses a tiny laser inserted under the skin, causing fat cells to rupture and melt.
Dr. Kevin Johnson, a surgeon and owner of Reflections Medical Spa in Coeur d'Alene, explains on the HealthLink segment that "SmartLipo melts the fat and rejuvenates the skin over the fat, with very little bleeding or bruising."
Although Dr. Johnson is the only Coeur d'Alene SmartLipo provider, another SmartLipo provider in Spokane is listed at the Inland Aesthetic Institute.
New York city dermatologist Bruce Katz, MD announced in a press release on June 16, 2008 that his Manhattan clinic has been chosen to debut a new version of the SmartLipo laser lipolysis device which integrates an additional wavelength known to be effective for skin tightening.
Combining the two wavelengths (1064 nm and the 1320 nm ) is supposed to improve the SmartLipo device's capabilities for fat liquefication and skin tightening.
According to the Hackensack Record, New Jersey plastic surgeons are reporting a noticeable increase in popularity of plastic surgery among men.
