Muscle Trainers Shaping Up My Butt

I DO NOT RUN.

Power walk, yes. Run, no. Not even jog. Don't like it, never had, never will. Which is why concepts like MBT's (Masai Barefoot Technology) and Muscle Trainers appeal to me. And Muscle Trainers in particular because running in them would be a very bad thing. Really. So here's my first impression...

Muscle Trainers have weights in their soles...

Crow's Feet Say You're Happy

The next time you notice your crow's feet, you might just see them in a different light. How? They might be showing everyone how happy you are.

At least that's what Elle magazine in their September issue is trying to say when it featured a recent study conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The results revealed that photoshopping crow's feet INTO a picture of a young subject's eyes doubled the viewers' perception of her happiness.

The study also indicated that the more space there is between your eyebrows and eyelashes, the more tired you might appear. (Note to self: Keep the plucking in check.) What's interesting about this, as an abstract from the study reveals, is that, "Surprisingly, simulating the skin resection of an upper blepharoplasty results in a paradoxical increase in the perception of tiredness as well." So as I sit here and contemplate how an eyelid lift would help me look more awake, would it be all for naught?RealSelf.com readers are undecided on Youthology

Repechage Drying Lotion Helps Acne Heal

If you're familiar with Mario Badescu's Drying Lotion, then Repechage HydraMedic Clear Complexion Drying Lotion will sound quite similar. In fact, they share some of the same ingredients including Zinc Oxide, Sulfur, Camphor and Salicylic Acid. But I was curious as to how the Repechage HydraMedic Drying Lotion would stack up vs. the Mario Badescu one.

I had the beginning of what looked like a blemish--I don't get breakouts frequently, so when I do, it's an event and I go through the, "hmm, wonder how that happened" preplexed look in the mirror. And then I pull out the artillery. There are 2 camps of people when it comes to zits: those who swear by Benzoyl Peroxide, and those who side with Salicylic Acid. I'm with the latter bunch, so it was a perfect opportunity to try Repechage HydraMedic Drying Lotion.

Hyalis An Option For Post-Cosmetic Procedure Skin

Since post-cosmetic procedure skin requires some extra TLC, it's best to use the skin care your doctor recommends. Short of that, there are some pampering moisturizers specifically developed for extra-sensitive post-op skin. One,  NeoCutis Hyalis 1% Hyaluronate Refining Serum, was recently mentioned in Self magazine's August '08 issue.

NeoCutis Hyalis 1% Hyaluronate Refining Serum is a hyaluronic-acid-based formula--hyaluronic acid being the little gem known as the "moisture magnet" for its ability to hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water.

Consider it for recovering from the peel!

New For Melasma Treatment: Octadecenedioic Acid

Since melasma is one of the most common skin problems facing adult women, skin care companies are constantly introducing new skin lighteners deemed safe and more effective than the others.

A recent product launched in the anti-melasma category is Eucerin White Solution Spot Treatment.  The Eucerin lightener contains a relatively new skin care ingredient for targeting hyperpigmentation: Octadecenedioic acid.

  • Octadecenedioic acid is said to interfere with pigment production.
  • According to Eucerin, it appears to be effective at skin lightening.
  • A small study of 19 women showed melasma severity decreased by 40% in eight weeks.

Although the Eucerin melasma treatment is not yet available in the US (tell us when it's available!), Nivea has alternate option. Nivea Body Natural Tone Face and Body Creme for an Even Skin Tone SPF 4 also contains Octadecenedioic acid to help even out skin tone and discoloration.

The SPF 4 is not enough sunscreen protection to ward off future discoloration, let alone sun damage in general. So you'll need to beef up the protection with a much higher level SPF (at least SPF 30). Tip: See doctor answers to What's the best sunscreen

NeoCutis Eye Cream Moisture Boost Worth It

I've noticed that as I've gotten older the skin around my eyes seems fine during the summer months (ok, so long as I'm wearing sunglasses and not perpetually squinting) but as we forge ahead into colder months, I find myself yearning for a more effective, moisturizing eye cream. I've recently been trying out NeoCutis Lumiere Bio-Restorative Eye Cream with PSP. NeoCutis is based in San Fran, but the products are made in Switzerland and I admit, there is some cache associated with "Swiss Skin Care"...

So here's my first impression...

Camouflage Your Leg Veins And Scars

Concealing or camouflaging imperfections on your legs is not quite as easy as doing it on your face--that much was apparent from the More magazine article we posted about on bare legs over 40.

Even so, Real Simple magazine (which recently named RealSelf.com one of the 10 best doctor-recommended health websites) mentioned in their July issue that the best way to deal with imperfections on your legs is indeed by using self-tanners and camouflage makeup.

So try as we may to kiss cellulite good-bye, perhaps the best we can hope for is to pretty it up a bit. Two to try:

1. Nivea Sun-Kissed Firming Moisturizer

2. Dermablend Leg & Body Cover Creme

What's working for your legs?

It Works Paste Appears To Be Working

I'll take some pics when the healing's all done, but I can see from the scabbing today that the actual mole itself is gone...bye-bye...no more to be seen. Keep in mind, the mole I used It Works Paste on was not exactly large, but still, as an experiment, it's beginning to look like I won't be seeing that little brown spot ever again...stay tuned for the final reveal...

Clothing That Makes Sunlight Healthier For The Skin

Across the lake from Seattle, Kirkland dermatologist Peter Cooperider, MD is such a big fan of therapeutic sunwear clothing that he's offering it for sale in his office and has added an online store to his website.

What is therapeutic sunwear?

Dr. Cooperider explains on his website that "instead of reflecting or absorbing the sun's energy, the clothing uses the energy by converting it to a wavelength (yellow or blue) that is therapeutic for the skin."

Toronto-based SunSoul, Inc. developed the fabrics and clothing that convert the sun's rays into effective light therapy. Prices for the hi-tech clothing range from $70 for a visor or baseball cap to $140 for a long sleeved shirt.

Trying Out It Works Paste To Remove Moles

Recently a RealSelf.com reader mentioned a product called It Works Paste. I hadn't actually heard of it before, and admittedly it intrigued me. I'm constantly wanting to remove specks and spots from my skin--all of them benign mind you--and truthfully, none of them are glaringly obvious. But still. So I decided to be a beauty guinea pig once again, and here's my first impression...
