Doctors and clinics performing LASIK surgery should consider themselves warned: properly inform consumers of the risks associated with the Lasik.
As reported by Reuters, the US FDA warning comes on the heels of a meeting held over a year ago on the topic where a number of Lasik patients came forward with complaints related to their laser eye surgery. Side-effects detailed included double vision, blurriness, and depression.
While 87% of RealSelf community members consider their LASIK "worth it", some of the Lasik reviews highlight downsides:
Cincinnati-based LCA vision - a nationwide LASIK laser vision correction provider - posted a loss of over 8 million dollars in the last quarter of 2008.
KESQ news reports that the state of Nevada has issued a restraining order to stop Dr. Stella Chou and Vikas Jain of Lasik First from practicing lasik procedures. Lasik First advertised highly discounted Lasik surgery for patients in California.
According to the report, a doctor affiliated with Lasik First blinded 22 patients and the clinic misrepresented the medical qualifications of a staff member:
Reports about the postponement of elective surgical procedures abound during uncertain times. Breast implants, botox and other cosmetic procedures have also taken a significant dive in recent months as consumers cut back.
According to an AP report, LASIK eye surgery is just as vulnerable to economic instability as the other cash-procedure siblings.
LCA Vision, a major LASIK provider in Cincinnati reports that over the last three months, the number of vision correction procedures at their facilities was less than half of the number performed during the same time period last year.

New York City ophthalmologist Dr. Emil W. Chynn of Park Avenue Laser in Manhattan sends patients home with a DVD of their procedure with an incentive to post their video on YouTube, write a glowing review of their surgery, and link to the doctor's website.
To motivate the patients, they are given the choice of $400 in free Botox or $100 off their Lasek procedure, which is different from LASIK.
