Nose job nation

Nose jobs are common in IranWhere in the world is the rate of rhinoplasty surgery the highest? If you were thinking Los Angeles, you'd be far off. The nation of nose jobs is Iran.

Rhinoplasty has become a common reward for passing college entrance exams. Some even undergo surgery two or three times - at a fraction of the cost of Western procedures - to perfect their profiles framed by the ever-present hijabs, or scarfs, they must wear. [Chicago Tribune ]

I'll admit this fact took me by surprise. I have a blindness to what's really happening in Iranian culture. For instance, that the youth are fans of shows like Friends and admire Nicole Kidman.

Nose jobs are so abundant that many seek the surgery more than once. Most interestingly even if they make excuses for the surgery like "I have a deviated septum," the surgery bandages are proudly worn in public. Apparently you can't avoid seeing a bandaged nose while walking the streets of Tehran.

A sad comment I read was that many youths were getting nose jobs due to boredom. When surgery becomes your relief from boredom that speaks volumes to what's happening in a society.

Wow, that's a suprise. I know Iran isn't the 3rd world country most Americans think of it as, but more than the US? But yeah, out of boredom? That's a bit... strange.

Yes. It is quite stupid. I was in Iran and they treat you like you are retarded if you are past the age of 20 and haven't had a nose job yet.
