Rhinoplasty was a trending topic this week in searches on RealSelf.com, so we tapped into expert Dr. John Diaz to shed some light on the pre-procedure musts. Here's what he had to say:
Rhinoplasty can not only improve the appearance of the nose, but the appearance of the entire face. For this reason, it is an extremely important decision that should be made only after careful consideration and research. The following questions are the essential things you should ask and mull over before undergoing your rhinoplasty.
5 Questions to Ask your Surgeon
- Are you board certified in Plastic or Otolaryngology surgery?
- Can I review your before and after pictures?
- Do you think the results I expect are realistic?
- Are there any potential issues or risks with my rhinoplasty?
- What can I expect during recovery?
The most important thing to know is whether or not the surgeon is board certified. Make sure the surgeon is board-certified in either Plastic Surgery or Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery). These are the only two specialties qualified to do rhinoplasty and board certification guarantees they have met the requirements to do the procedure.
Secondly, ask to see the surgeon’s before and after pictures. Make sure they have performed a variety of nose surgeries, and that you like the results, to ensure they have the experience to give you the results.
Ask the surgeon if they can give you the result you are looking for, and if your expectations are realistic. This will require that you know exactly what you would like to change about your nose, as well as what you would like not to change. Sometimes, because of the anatomy of the nose or the thickness of the skin, certain results won’t be possible.
It is also important to ask the surgeon about the possible risks of the procedure. Every individual case is unique, and there may be specific issues with your case that are different than other patients’. Being aware of the risks is necessary to ensure that you are fully informed and prepared to handle them should they arise.
Rhinoplasty can be an incredibly satisfying and life-changing procedure. But, in order to have the best chance for success, remember to do your research and ask the right questions.
During a rhinoplasty procedure, the surgeon operates on and manipulates at least 10 different parts? All of these parts are small, some are only a millimeter or two in thickness and each part is connected to another part. If you move one small piece, it can move the other pieces around it and change the whole appearance of the nose. Watch the video to learn more!
