Legitimate anti-aging drugs (in the works)

Sirtris pharmaceuticals is working to bring drugs based on resveratrol to the market to address age-related diseaseSales of the supplement resveratrol have surged.  I'm told it's hard to find on store shelves.  The demand stems from recent reports that the substance in red wine called resveratrol combats weight gain and slows the effects of aging.  Mice who were administered high doses of resveratrol dramatically increased exercise endurance and kept off weigh gain despite getting stuffed with food.  So, if it works in mice, many of us have decided to follow suit and try resveratrol in our diet.

The idea of using concentrated resveratrol to fight age-related disease is not lost on a pharmaceutical startup called Sirtris. Sirtis, featured in Fortune magazine (February) is already clinically testing resveratrol-based substances for diabetic blood sugar control.

It was refreshing to learn that the Harvard and MIT-trained founders of Sirtris are taking a path of promoting the benefits of fighting disease that come with age, rather that age itself.  In other words, these guys are legit and should be watched.

Fortune Magazine features a story about Sirtris PharmaceuticalsIf Sirtris theory about the pharmaceutical applications for resveratrol are accurate, the company plans to develop drugs that tackle some of the most serious age-related problems including:

- Weight gain
- Cancer prevention
- Heart disease and stroke prevention
- Diabetes prevention
- Increase exercise endurance
