A "Not To Do" List For Maintaining Natural Beauty

Does anyone know a woman who doesn’t have a list of errands, tasks or projects that boggle the mind?  I’m not talking about a thrilling bucket list with items like hang-gliding or flirting with George Clooney, but true chores that need to be checked off before we can finally relax.

Let’s all take a break and think about a list of things we should NOT do in order to preserve our natural beauty as long as possible, as reported by some of the doctors on RealSelf.

NO MORE:

  • Don't open bottles with teeth!Smoking!
Dr. Gregory Wiener warns, “It is absolutely the worst thing you can do to yourself with regards to speeding up the aging process.”  The Chicago plastic surgeon adds that smoking negatively affects the healing process after surgery.
  • Skipping sunscreen (at least 30 SPF every time we go out the door)
“I can’t emphasize enough how damaging the sun can be to the skin,” says Dr. Henri Gaboriau, facial plastic surgeon outside Seattle.

  • Using teeth as tools (Corkscrew, anyone?)
Chewing ice & bones, opening wrappers and holding pins are among the list of bad habits reported by NY cosmetic dentist Dr. Jeffrey Golub-Evans.

  • Using saliva on contact lenses instead of solution
“They would be better of rinsing the contacts in a toilet than their mouth because the toilet has fewer germs,” according to LA ophthalmologist Dr. Robert K. Maloney.

While we’re at it, we might want to knock the alcohol consumption down a peg or two.  Who can afford to accelerate the loss of brain cells as we age?  Soft drinks aren’t our friend either…did you know that the phosphoric acids contribute to the creation of kidney stones?  Try looking pretty when passing one of those things.

We should stop staying up so late just to see what Chelsea Handler has to say.  Compared to the cost of age-defying cosmetic procedures, beauty sleep is free, right?  While we’re at it, let’s snuff out procrastination and start some kind of exercise regime today.  If you just can’t tear yourself away from this blog, start with some kegels. Go ahead, you won’t even break a sweat.

I don’t know which is less fun, a “to do” list or a “not to do” list.  But I do know one thing: finding a good balance between work & play and living fully & living wisely has got to show itself in terms of natural beauty...right?
