If you can play Pac-Man, you can grow a beauty company

Secret's out. Everything you need to know was right in that joystick. And I'm talking the big kahunas: LVMH, L'Oreal, P&G, Estee Lauder. Why? It's all in the gobble. And with the latest news (Cosmetics Design, 6/18/08) that the EC has cleared the way for L'Oreal's buy-out of YSL Beaute, it's hard to say who's definitively winning, but L'Oreal just ate another ghost--don't ask if it was Blinky, Pinky, Inky or Clyde.

Submitted for your perusal, a partial "who really owns (ate) what" overview:

LVMH (aka Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy): Parfums Christian Dior, Guerlain, Parfums Givenchy, Kenzo Parfums, La Brosse et Dupont, Benefit Cosmetics, Fresh, Make Up For Ever, Acqua di Parma, Perfumes Loewe, Sephora (and that's just their cosmetics side)

L'Oreal: L'Oreal Paris, Biotherm, Cacharel, Diesel, Garnier, Giorgio Armani, Helena Rubinstein, Inneov, Kerastase, Kiehl's, Lancome, La Roche-Posay, Le Club des Createurs, Matrix, Maybelline NY, Mizani, Ralph Lauren, Redken, Sanoflore, Shu Uemura, Skinceuticals, Softsheen Carson, The Body Shop, Vichy, Viktor + RolfPie charts inspire beauty companies to gobble up smaller companies

Estee Lauder: Estee Lauder, Aramis, Clinique, Prescriptives, Lab Series Skincare for Men, Origins, Tommy Hilfiger Toiletries, MAC, Kiton, La Mer, Bobbi Brown, Donna Karan Cosmetics, Aveda, Jo Malone, Bumble + Bumble, Michael Kors Beauty, Darphin, American Beauty, Flirt!, goodskin, grassroots, Sean John Fragrances, Missoni Profumi, Daisy Fuentes, Tom Ford Beauty, Mustang, Coach, Ojon

Procter & Gamble: Cover Girl, Crest, Max Factor, Noxema, Olay, Pantene, SK-II (and a whole bunch more you use around the house)

You may wonder how companies get the urge to gobble up to begin with. You MBA's can give me all your "business" reasons, but I think it comes down to the simple pie chart. If you were looking at this (at upper right) in your office all day--and I have in a former life, what would your thoughts turn to?
