What's All Over Her Arms? Kim Kardashian Confesses

MakenzieR on 22 Jul 2011 at 10:54am

With an empire built almost exclusively on her looks (because let's face it, the sibling squabbles on their show are pretty mundane), Kim Kardashian made a confession that could greatly affect her career.

She has psoriasis. Just like 2-3% of Americans.

"Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder characterized by skin inflammation and flaking that occurs because skin cells grow or turnover too quickly.  People affected by psoriasis may also show the following symptoms: thick, red or silvery patches of skin, tender, itchy, dry or cracked skin; thickened, ridged fingernails and toenails, stiff or sore joints (a sign of psoriatic arthritis)."

Doesn't sound too attractive, does it? '

“People don’t understand the pressure on me to look perfect,” Kim said. “When I gain a pound, it’s in the headlines, so imagine what the tabloids will do to me when they see all these spots.”

Apparently Kim's mom, Kris Jenner, was diagnosed with the same disease at age 30. But it's still unclear if psoriasis is truly genetic.

While there are creams and lasers to keep psoriasis symptoms at bay, it's unlikely she'll be patch-free 24/7/365. It'll undoubtedly be difficult for her to deal with on a personal level. But she doesn't seem like a stranger to Photoshop, so it's hard to imagine it will truly affect her career.

Hopefully Kim will become a positive face (like LeAnn Rimes) for the misunderstood auto-immune disease.

The #1 thing everyone should know? It's not contagious.

Do you think Kim's career is in jeopardy because of psoriasis?

I think that using what ever you can to make the psoriasis go away is great. I have found that it's a process to see what works for you and stick with it till it does not work anymore. So many people that have psoriasis go through this process. Years ago, i used the mild shampoos and they worked fine for me, but as time when on, i need something stronger. I am currently using PsoriaTrax Shampoo. Very strong, but the smell washes away nicely, especially when i follow with a conditioner.

I wondered about that too, Makenzi, but never had the patience to sit on the toilet and wait and then get back into the shower. My skin is really sensitive, too, and I worried a bit about that. I never wanted to rub the shampoo in and leave it - I thought it might eventually burn, and also, it smells exactly like pine - not bad, but not necessarily something you'd want to perfume yourself with! lol. After shampooing, I use a regular conditioner (Pantene, cause I like it) and the pine smell goes right away - I've nevr had a bird try to nest in my hair. ;) Good luck!

Between the image of sitting on the toilet covered in shampoo, and a bird's nest in pine scented hair, your comment had me laughing out loud. :)

I have psoriasis and have tried every Rx cream and even did expensive light therapy for my entire body and hands. The creams are garbage, they only hold it at bay for so long. Light therapy is expensive and can cause skin cancer. I managed to find natural organic products online and am virtually patch free now (even the stubborn patches that were on my elbows that never completely went away with creams and light therapy) only one thing worked - its called SerenaSkin. Also I had scalp psoriasis, my doctors gave me all sorts of sprays/liquids to make it go away, but if not used consistently it did not work and after a while my body became immune to it that it didnt even work AT ALL just MADE IT WORSE - and lets not forget to mention the side effects!! For the scalp i found organic herbal shampoo from Just Natural Skin Care, also online (just google it). I suggest anyone with severe psorisis to try these products out, they have changed my life!! I had psoriasis on my back, thighs/legs, buttox and cleft, breasts, stomach, in ears, hands, elbows and ENTIRE scalp. Now i have only a couple patches on my hair line near my ears and a little left on my hands but it is clearly healing. Other than that it has all cleared, all in a matter of a few months (started in may/june and it is now the start of september, and i have had these patches for 2-3 years). Also, I drink a lot of herbal tea (lemon balm/valerian/chamomile mix) to calm the nerves. Very important to keep stress levels down when you are fighting psoriasis. I'm also considering acupuncture, I hear that helps as well. As for Kim, she is a beautiful model and anyone who questions this is only jealous of her success. I felt relieved when I watched the "Kardashians" episode where Kim first got her outbreak, it just shows she is human and no one is perfect. Don't hate on her for her success and wish her well as she copes with this disease, its not fun no matter who or where you are in life.

I had it really bad in a few patches on my scalp too. I use Neutrogena's TGel shampoo (the original, NOT the one for flaking!) I used it every day, leaving it on for a few minutes, and after about 6 weeks it was gone! I was thrilled. Now I use it maybe once a week or so, more often if my scalp gets flakey, and it's never come back bad. And the shampo is only about $8 a bottle. Do NOT try the generic Walmart version - it doesn't work. Get the real stuff. You'll love it! :)

Thanks for sharing your tip! I wonder if using the shampoo on body patches would help, too?

What's the matter? Someone forget your birthday? Or do you just enjoy walking into a room for the sole purpose of being the rudest one in it?

I don't think that her skin condition should affect her career, but sadly with the shallowness of society it very well could affect it. For those who keep asking "what exactly is her career?" She is a model, and a very talented one at that.

She's not a model. Lmao. She is a socialite due to her wealthy family, former friendship with Paris Hilton, and most importantly, a sex tape with Ray J. Class act.

If she's mainly doing photoshoots, they can photoshop her outbreaks out. Simple as that. Now, if she's on video, they'll show. But obviously if her mom has it, she knows a way to manage it and stuff, so she should talk to Kris about what she's done all these years. But nah, I don't think her career will be over. If she obsesses about it and lets it bring her down, yeah..probably, though.

I wonder if the sesame oil would work on Lichen Sclerosis? It's another auto immune disease.

Organic light sesame oil will help tremendously.

Good suggestion, Noliah! How did you come across that one?

I have an autoimmune disease, and with it came a slew of skin issues. I was battling a severe case of peri-oral dermatitis before I had medical insurance, so I was on my own to find my own solutions. After a great deal of searching, I came across the information about organic sesame oil. I wouldn't dare to say it's a "cure-all", but it's helped me a great deal. The dermatitis was completely gone within 3 weeks and if there's a flare-up, I just dab the oil on a couple of times a day and it's gone within a few days.

She should get a prescription called "Enbrel". That is supposed to work for psoriasis. It's about $2000.00 a month, but what is $2000.00 to someone like her?

Wow I'm sorry to hear about your wife Jeff.  I think it is just something that is hereditary, after all, Kris Jenner has had it since she was young.  Kim still looks great.

My wife just found out that she has psoriasis. She is 32. It does make her depressed at times because her whole body has patches. Her dr recently prescribe Enbrael. It is supposed to be the newest medicine to slow it down to make it disappear. The drs told her that she needed her gall bladder removed due to five gall stones. Wlll one dr told her if it does get removed that her psoriasis will be gone. Well the gallbladder was removed and within 3 weeks the psoriasis got worst. So Kim good luck.

She probably is faking it for more drama on her disgusting show. She probably paid for her own engagement ring too. She should hope she doesn't get it on her butt. They don't make enough creams for that monster.
