Is Bob Greene's Best Life Diet worth it?

Is Bob Greene's Best Life Diet worth it?
Beauty Cred on Jun 2, 2008

I'm burned out on my current shelf of diet books, South Beach, Sonoma Diet, et al.

This sent me looking to add a different kind of diet book to my Summer reading that makes the bathing suit less dreaded, and that means eating remains a joyful event.  Recipes for real world foods in the Hungry Girl

Heard from one friend this weekend that "Hungry Girl" by Lisa Lillien is a no-nonsense, no-guilt trove of recipes for real foods. Fudge, pizza, french fries.  That makes the list. Another girlfriend is reading the Most Decadent Diet Ever.  Ah...I'm liking this trend!

As I was plunking around diet book reviews online I ran into a trend I'm not in love with exemplified by Bob Greene and his "Best Life Diet" plan.

I'm out of touch with Mr. Greene's latest exploits on Oprah (his tivo tapings get dumped--sorry Bob, nothing personal). So I visited bestlifediet.com to get better informed.

From what I can tell, the Best Life Diet is a non-diet.  Apparently skinny marketing executives aim to turn "diet" into a new 4-letter swear word.

Diet is being replaced with buzz terms like "healthy lifestyle".  Accordingly, Bob calls his plan "a way of living — of eating, of exercising, of viewing your life — that puts you at your healthiest".

Mr. Greene's intentions are certainly not altruistic. He'd like to charge you $59 for a 3 month subscription (that can only be cancelled after calling a phone number somewhere on his website).  He presents the charge in a recession-friendly "less than $5 per week".Diet book and cook book for good eating

For these continuous charges on your MasterCard, Bob will give you access to...him.  That, and information:

• Daily/Weekly Meal Plans, based on your lifestyle and preferences

• Extensive Best Life Approved Recipe Database

• Robust Video Library, featuring a suite of “how-to” exercise demonstrations, as well as related diet and nutrition clips

Reading between the lines you can see I'm leaning toward The Best Life Diet is not worth it (without even trying it out).  So, to be fair, please--someone who's tried the plan-- tell me otherwise!
