Are Curves Making a Comeback?

There was a great article by Booth Moore in The Los Angeles Times on Sunday: "Does Size Really Matter?"Among several insights by the writer, she notes that female stars in the entertainment industry are undergoing a genuine “super-sizing.” Think Sara Ramirez of “Grey’s Anatomy,” America Ferrara of “Ugly Betty,” and “Dreamgirls’,” Jennifer Hudson. All of these women match the average American woman’s size of 12-14 (as stated by Moore), and all are being applauded and given great starring roles, without having to wither into a size 0.
But, and there always seem to be a “but” anytime Hollywood veers off the beaten path, “what goes up,” so to speak, “must come down." For every magazine proudly featuring these voluptuous divas on their covers, there’s one screaming with exclamation points, headlines like, “How to Lose Weight like Jordan Sparks!” (the newly crowned, plus-size “American Idol.” ) Just when we think a woman is being accepted for the way her body looks, we’re slapped with Hollywood’s incessant reality check that she still isn’t good enough… whether she’s too skinny or too fat, I don’t believe that any female in the spotlight will ever get a permanent gold star for her figure no matter what her size is. And isn't it funny that the male stars seem to escape the scrutiny entirely?
What do you think readers? Whose celebrity figure do you most admire? Do you think Hollywood will ever leave weight out of the picture?

It really burns me that XL tops don't even fit me these days. Yes, I have boobs but I'm not "fat," I'm not "XL." And I think Sara Ramirez looks great. America Ferrera and Kate Winslet are not fat, they aren't even "normal" sized. They are gorgeous and look exactly as they should!

We've been having this debate since J.Lo first stepped on the scene years ago. Face it - Hollywood is not going to take the first step. It's a follower, not a leader. They make films according to what is already accepted - meaning that if we really want things to change then it has to change out HERE first. These women have made great strides, just seeing them out there is an improvement, but NONE of them are ever the romantic lead. We can't get skinny women of other races into the romantic comedy lead, then what hope does a normal to plus-sized actress even have?
