Eat Your Way to Whiter Teeth

Want a Hollywood smile like Scarlett?  Apparently, you can eat your way to a brighter smile.  A recent report listed the best foods to eat for whiter teeth -- a yummier way to a whiten.

According to MSNBC, try these foods:

  • Crunchy food
    Chomp on some apples, cauliflower, celery and carrots.  These foods work as an abrasive scrub for teeth. As with all food, they also help with the production of saliva, the body's fluid thatbreaks down food and natually washes away plaque, which stains the enamel of your teeth.
     
  • Fruit 
    One word - acid.  Oranges and pineapples contain citric acid that can actually kill bacteria, which causes decay.  Citric acid can also increase saliva production.  Strawberries contain malic acid which actually naturally whitens teeth.  Does that mean eating strawberry shortcake can be good for us?  
     
  • Dairy
    More acid.  Dairy products such as yogurt, milk and hard cheeses (like cheddar or parmesan) contain lactic acid, which may help protect teeth against decay.  According to the report, researchers think proteins in yogurt may bind to teeth and prevent them from attack by harmful cavity-causing acids. Dairy also contains calcium, which we all now strenghthens teeth.
     
  • Water
    Obviously, this cleans everything.  Enough said.
