Our hearts go out to former Dancing With the Stars hostess Samantha Harris, who is currently being treated for breast cancer. The mother of two, who turned 40 in December 2013, is scheduled to undergo a double mastectomy this month.

Samantha went to see a specialist after she found a lump in her right breast during a routine self examination — and this was after receiving a clean mammogram months before. (It pays to be diligent with those self-exams, ladies!) She underwent a needle biopsy and then a lumpectomy, which revealed she had cancer.

The celebrity mom sought out three specialists, who advised her to get either a double mastectomy or a second lumpectomy with radiation. Faced with the decision, Samantha took control, "I was sick of feeling the way that I did in the days after the diagnosis."

Samantha, who admitted she felt “much calmer” after her big decision, chose the double mastectomy, which she will have later this month.

After the news about her cancer and surgery was released, there was an outpouring of support from fans. Samantha thanked her 20,000 followers on Twitter, “Thk u all who have shared your personal #cancer stories w/me. So inspiring & life affirming. I still have many more to read and will!! Xoxo”
