Your Skin is Dull because you're Lazy
That's right. You. Are. Lazy. You just don't wash your face every night and that right there is your problem. So no more excuses about the work schedule, the kids or any other time-taking to-do that never seems to get done. Hmm. Ok, says who? Well, in the July '08 issue of Flare (Toronto), Toronto-based dermatologist Dr. Fred Weksberg shared some comments on dull skin. Skin brightening & rejuvenation continues to be a hot topic on RealSelf.com--and also in the beauty press in general. Here's what Dr. Weksberg had to say:
"Personal hygiene is key," says Dr. Weksberg. "I've seen more women develop dull skin because they're too tired to take their makeup off at night." Mild exfoliation is also necessary, he says, but don't overdo it.
One at-home exfoliator to try that gets a Beauty Cred thumbs up is BeFine Exfoliating Cleanser with Brown Sugar, Sweet Almonds & Oats. It's got actual grains vs. some melt-away specks that do nothing--so you'll see and feel it working. Beyond at-home exfoliation, the article mentions the following at the dermatologist's office:
"Start with a glycolic peel," says Dr. Weksberg. A dermatologist will usually begin your treatment with a 20-percent glycolic-acid peel and gradually move up to 70 percent in successive sessions, depending on how much peeling action your complexion requires. One peel costs approximately $100. Dr. Weksberg also recommends the use of an antioxidant cream, such as DCL High Potency "C" Serum ($100 for a 52 mL bottle). Other dermatologist cures include a prescription exfoliator, such as vitamin A acid, for $25-$40. But IPL and Fraxel laser treatments give you the most bang for your buck. "Fraxel is the more powerful of the two," says Dr. Weksberg. "It freshens your complexion by removing small areas of skin and restructuring the surface." Three to six treatments are recommended at $500-$1,500 per session.
I guess there's something to Dr. Weksberg's point--heck, we all know leaving makeup on overnight is more in line with what a late night out calls for (not that I have those) vs. what the dermatologist prescribes for a skincare regimen. But I'm not completely sold. I still say there's a lot more going on from a holistic standpoint--and that includes work schedules, kids and sleep deprivation.
